What will be the new birthday flower?
When I lived in Wisconsin, I knew it was the time of my birthday when the lilacs and lily-of-the-valley were blooming. I loved bringing the flowers into the house to make it smell like spring. The delicate flowers with a scent that can fill a whole apartment were like a birthday gift from nature, even if sometimes a little belated in years when snow hung around through much of April.
Here in central Illinois, the lilacs already started blooming last week, and I think the lily-of-the-valley on the side of the house will be ready to flower this week. Both flowerings will probably be done by the time my birthday rolls around in mid-May.
I see that the neighbor's peonies are developing buds. The bushes are next to the driveway, visible out our kitchen window. Maybe those will be the new harbinger of my birthday.
