Our first look at the new neighborhood

Aug 17, 2007 23:19

Andrew and I have both fallen in love with our oh-so-convenient location. We can walk or bike to three nearby shopping centers, two grocery stores, the University, a major bus depot, the train station. There is a large park that overlooks the Bow River, just a short bike ride away.  There are plenty of nice shade trees in our little condo village and around the neighborhood. It’s easy to get downtown on the C-Train, the local light rail transit.

We travel to two oh-so-convenient shopping centers to visit our nearest bank to try to open an account and to get some groceries and transit tickets and call the moving company to find out when our stuff is due to arrive. We can’t open an account because we’ve arrived at the bank too late in the day. We’re there at around 3 p.m. The bank closes at 4 p.m. As we discover along the way later, pretty much any office or bank closes at 4 p.m.

We have only $60 left after buying the transit tickets, and this has to last us until Monday or longer. We buy the minimum of what is needed to set up the kitchen with spices and foods to cook a few things and eat breakfast for a few days. We have to be vegan for a while because meat and dairy products cost twice as much as they do back home. Now we have $10 left. We really need to open this bank account Friday to get access to the money in the cashier’s check we brought from the U.S. More on that later.
