Second day of classes is now over, time for a rundown of first impressions.
TR 9:10-10:25 O.D.E. (Ordinary Differential Equations for those of you that don't know your TLAs) w/Mao-Pei Tsui
The Professor's name is Mao-Pei, guess what my complaint about him is. Engrish aside, seems nice enoough, and the accent should be gotten over soon enough. We didn't learn anything the first class, but he did give an anecdote about a student explaining that he had just gotten out of jail and thus missed the final. Points for humanizing math.
TR 11:00-12:15 Calc 4A w/Herve Jacquet
Ok, from thick--well neigh incomprehensible--Chinese accent to thick--well neigh incomprehensible--French accent. First class was double integrals, nothing too hard. We're covering multiple integration and vector calc the first 2/3 of the class. His discretionary section is on complex vars so that should be fun stuff.
TR 2:40-3:55 Thermodynamics w/Thomas Marshall
Good stuff. The first day was simple, but that's all of them. I'm excited about some of the material, getting a real definition of entropy is gonna be nice. The second half of the semester goes into more microscopic topics, so that should be interesting.
As a side note, I saw one other sophomore I knew in the class (as opposed to the majority in my other classes).
MW 11:00-12:15 Mechanics w/Michael Shaevitz
First day was a bunch of stuff about vector derivatives in different coordinate systems (Polar, Cylindrical, Spherical), nothing too exciting but important nonetheless. It looks promising, alot of what I already know done in more depth than Christ went into.
MW 2:10-4:00 Contemporary Civilization w/Shannan Clark
Well see. I honestly don't know what to say yet save that I need to watch what I say about a given topic, otherwise there's about 15 CC kids ready to jump down my throat. Also as a note I'm never gonna have my back to anyone, I wanna see the firing squad when I call them down on myself. Material looks interesting, but I'm not gonna lie and say I'll put that at the top of my list. Lets face it, Mechanics and Thermo can both pull rank on this as classes.
MW 6:10-8:00 Yiddish w/Mark Miller
Not quite what I was hoping for. He's teaching the language as a nuts and bolts operation working from reading and grammar. After hearing the great things about all the singing and kitchy stuff in the other sections it's different. Upside, this section fits my schedule, and I'll learn the language properly. Downside, probably not gonna be able to speak it as well.
As a side note, the brief separation between classes will prevent me from holding down any sort of job during the week.
20 Credit semester, well see how it goes.
