Months after its theatrical release, and weeks after the release of the DVD, I broke down and purchased John Cameron Mitchell's "Shortbus" from a used-dvd seller on Amazon. I'd called numerous large-scale video chains here in Fresno, to no avail.
One Blockbuster employee actually asked me, 'Oh - is that the DVD about special needs children?'
Me: 'No - it's actually an unrated movie that features graphic sex in a non-pornographic kind of way.'
Silence.
Golden!
The DVD came a couple days ago and I successfully watched the film, avoiding awkward walk-ins from my parents. I enjoyed the movie, quite a lot. I think that JCM's treatment of sex as something not to be feared and as something that we all need to be refreshing in our semi-puritanical society. I listen to NPR and hear sound bytes from Congresspeople about moral depravity, and then watch numerous "sextras" in Shortbus get off, and I feel like the world is going to be ok. But sex isn't the point of this post. The point is that
A) I haven't posted in over a year, so I figured it might be time to get some thoughts into the world again, because I'm living in Fresno temporarily and while enjoying the time off, I'm also craving some connections. All sorts of connections.
B) Shortbus takes place in post-9/11 NYC, and it reminds me that my hiatus here in Fresno is truly temporary. I still think that I'll end up living in New York at some point. But the current plan is to move to Chicago in mid-January, hopefully working for a shiny computer company that features a half-eaten fruit as its logo.
C) The discipline of writing/blogging/journaling is lost to me, so I figure I'll start up with LiveJournal for some written nothings, and perhaps will develop some somethings (eventually...)
Spinach salad and diet coke for lunch. I now have a trainer named Rhonda who wants to whip my ass into a swimmer's build. I'm terrified of her and she's half my size.
