The flower is called a morning glory. They aren't uncommon. However ... if there was any strangeness in the one you had smelled, it wasn't actually a flower at all.

It's... one of the many forms of something that is referred to as Mushi. A man named Ginko could tell you more about it, as he is familiar with them from his world. He did say that he had removed the ones with such particular effects... and others, as well.
