Marlene tried to fight it, she really did. Perhaps not as much as a normal person would, but she was too broken to muster up more energy. Her shoulder sunk and a loud sob escaped her lips. Her chest heaved and soon she was in full breakdown mode. She gasped for air, but she couldn't stop crying.

She'd lost everything.

Sirius was never getting out of that prison. The Ministry needed someone to blame, someone to give people peace of mind, and he was their Patsy.

Her stomach heaved, but there was nothing for her to expel.

Sirius wasn't much, she knew that. He was obnoxious, irresponsible, and a womanizer, but he'd always been good to her. He loved her, despite how stubborn and bitter she always was about everything. He was the only person who had every cared enough to fight for her. Sirius Black could have had anyone he wanted and he'd chosen her.

Unlike most men, he hadn't stopped trying either. Even when they argued about the war or their families, he proved how much he loved her every single day. With small acts, usually. Pulling the covers over her when she fell asleep with a book. Fresh coffee in the morning. Throwing the empty milk carton away. A flower. Holding her hand in public.

Not grand gestures by far, but it was more than some of her friends got and she loved him for it.

She was never going to find that again.

Even if she never saw him again, she couldn't live knowing he was going to rot for a crime he didn't commit. He despised Voldemort and loved his friends.

The only way he could have killed Peter if he had been responsible for Lily and James' deaths, but that was impossible. Creepy as Peter was, he was too cowardly to work for Voldemort and Voldemort had been the one to kill them. How, she didn't know. But she knew Sirius had nothing to do with it.

If she never believed anything else in this world, she would die believing that.

Marlene heard rusting and a voice, but she ignored it. She couldn't even muster up enough give a damn to compose herself.

Her life was over and before she could begin the new one, she needed to grieve.

How she was going to start over with nothing, she had no idea, but she had to try, because even if she knew the outcome, she would be damned if she didn't fight for Sirius as hard as he'd fought for her.

Severus quickly became aware that Marlene was having a sobbing fit....Over Black. Honestly, he didn't understand it.

But...he understood how it felt. Severus didn't have anymore tears left. Instead he had that constant, nagging pain deep in his core.

He closed his eyes tightly for a moment. He understood the pain but not why. It simply baffled him.

He sucked it up and stepped forward until he was just by her, reached into a pocket of his robes and squatted down, silently offering her a small handkerchief. It was black at white with his initials in the corner. His mother had made it for him years ago.

He didn't meet her eyes. He didn't even look at her properly. It was a small offering and he planned to give it to her and go, even if it did mean splinching again.

She felt a presence near her and she ignored it. She didn't want pity or for gloating. It would be coming, people insisting Sirius was all bad and the looks of pity. She couldn't handle it right now.

When she saw a figure in her peripheral vision, she couldn't ignore it anymore.

Glancing, she saw the last person she expected; Severus Snape. Upon further though, he was probably there to goad Sirius. Those two were ridiculous with their hatred of one another. She waved off his gesture. She appreciated it, really. She didn't want to be cruel. She had no fight left in her right now, but she didn't want to get cleaned up, she wanted to feel miserable for the moment. Tomorrow, she would have to find her strength, she needed this time to lose herself.

After a moment of trying with no success, she managed to get words out.

"I'm fine, thank you."

Her voice was barely audible. She was still fighting off sobs and speech was a near impossible feat at the moment.

Once she glanced up, Severus finally did as well, and his eyes caught hers. They were as red as his. She denied his offer. He found himself slightly annoyed by this. It was probably because everything was annoying him.

He sighed at the sound of her voice. She could barely speak. All this over -

He bit his tongue. He was trying very hard not to get into things. He didn't need it. Neither did she...

But it was just so fucking ridiculous.

"I er, didn't expect anyone else to be here. I'll leave you." He pocketed his handkerchief and made to stand, his eyes returning to the prison.

Marlene sat for a moment, saying nothing. But...old habits.

She called after him.

"Why are you here?" She bit her tongue for a moment. Old Marlene would ask if he was here to turn his sorry ass in. She'd always suspected him of being a Death Eater, but New Marlene didn't give a shit. She was just curious as to why anyone else would be here.

Well, expect Molly. She was sure the moment the mother hen of the Order realized she was missing, she'd find her here, hours later, still staring at the prison. Maybe she could talk Dumbledore into getting the Minister to let her see Sirius...

Her heart jumped at the hopeful thought and she managed to at least look up at Severus.

Severus had stood and started to turn when she called. He paused. Why do you care? is what he felt like asking.

He looked down and was surprised to find her looking back up at him. He kept his face blank, although he knew he was just as unkempt as she was, and his eyes just as red, so he doubted it did much good. But at least he could keep from looking so empty.

"I..." He wasn't telling her the whole story, even though he knew hers. "I needed somewhere quiet. The streets are filled with cheering," to his dismay, his voice gave out on the last word. He cleared it quickly and continued a bit louder, "It was distracting. I didn't think anybody else would be here of all places. Apparently I was wrong to assume that."

Marlene glanced down.

"Cheering...right..." She understood. Voldemort was gone. Why did it matter if good people had died in the process? Was it wrong not to feel a little happy that it was at least all over?

No. Because it wasn't supposed to end like this.

"They wouldn't let me in..."

She wondered if they'd found Alice and Frank yet...they were dead, she was sure of it. She considered asking him if there was any news, but why would he care? She was going to have to get up soon, to see Mrs. Longbottom, or find Emmeline. They'd know something.

Poor Neville and Harry...

Severus sighed. She wanted in. In Azkaban. That Black really had her wrapped around his finger.

"No, I don't suppose they would. But you wouldn't want in there, either. Trust me."

He looked at the prison. Sometimes he felt like he was looking at his future. Dumbledore knew where his true loyalties were, but that meant nothing. So had The Dark lord. Or at least, so he'd thought. And for some time, he'd been right. Severus knew now he was a fool to ever join him. And now everyone will be investigated. All the Death Eaters will be sought after.

But, despite this, it was all over. Right? Severus wasn't sure. With Lily gone, it felt like nothing and everything was over all at once. But it just didn't make sense. How could The Dark Lord have been destroyed? What had happened in Godric's Hollow that night?

The one thing he knew was that he was not entirely safe, Dark Lord or not.

"I can handle myself."

She could...well, could. Can, maybe not.

Her pity party was over. Severus had made sure of that. She stood, shakily and with effort, but she eventually made it. "I'll go then...someone should tell Lily's sister..." Not that she would care. But it was something to do or say, rather, to get away politely. Severus was an asshole, but she was in no mood to fight right now.

Things needed to get done, which meant she needed to stop crying and feeling sorry for herself. Lily, James, and Sirius deserved better.

"I don't doubt that, however, that doesn't matter around Dementors."

Severus briefly considered helping her get up. She seemed unstable. However, he quickly withdrew the thought. She wasn't one to accept help. And, frankly, he wasn't one to offer it.

He snorted. The only thing that could bring any whisper of amusement from Lily's death was the thought that Petunia would actually care.

"You really think she would give a shit?"

Marlene shuddered at the thought, still remembering how cold she'd felt when she'd been on the island itself. Like...well, not much worse than she felt now, to be honest.

"No." Marlene looked at him, some of her forcity coming back to her. "But Lily would want her to know and she's the only family either of them had left. It's the least I can do for them...

It's that or sit around worrying about the Longbottoms and..." She glanced back towards the Prison. "Other things."

Severus looked down for a moment, his hair falling down over his shoulders. He took a slow breath. The pain in his chest seemed to hurt even more deeply at the thought of Petunia being the last one Lily had had. Petunia, of all people. The woman had hated her and everything she was.

"You're right." He admitted tightly, raising his head. Thank you is what he felt like he should be saying. Of course, he didn't.

He followed her glance. "Try not to dwell. Some things aren't worth occupying your mind."

Marlene's face went hard and looked back at him.

"And don't presume to know things in which you know nothing about. I swear on my dead family, he didn't do it. I may be willing to believe he killed Peter...but he did not betray them. And if he did kill Peter...then he deserved it."

She remembered very vividly Sirius going off about the 'rat' betraying him. She was pretty close to the smartest person in the world and she knew, without him telling her, he hadn't been the secret keeper. No one would believe her, but she just knew that stinking little creep was responsible and if Sirius had killed him...

She wouldn't shed a tear for him.

Her mind felt clearer now.

She glanced back at Snape.

"Good day, Severus..." she paused. "If you'd like, I'll make sure to inform you of the services." She didn't wait for a response, that was all of the kindness he was getting from her.
