for tomorrow's book club meeting - wow, it's been a while.
I must be one of the last people on earth who hasn't actually watched the anime (seen a few episodes here and there but never got around to anything elseXD), so basically my entire Kenshin knowledge comes from the manga, and I've only read about the first half of the series and the last volume.
Anyway! As far as the story goes it's a pretty standard Western.XD Main cast, motives and mise en place introduced (I only just noticed, but he got pretty much everybody except Megumi in the first volume. I'm still reeling from discovering that RK is Watsuki's debut series, and that the only other series he's really done since then is Buso Renkin. I guess that's why the two series seem so similar to me even though they're totally different (though some of the character traits remain the same - Tokiko=Kenshin+Kaoru, Kazuki=Yahiko >.> - Kenshin's definitely the more idealistic of the two; there's something a lot more cynical about Buso Renkin.)
idle wondering: aside from the super-prolific legends like Osamu Tezuka, how many series would a typical manga-ka pump out in a lifetime? Does working in shounen/shoujo make a difference? I've noticed that the (female) shoujo manga-ka will offhandedly mention "oh, this is my 3rd or 4th series..." and a lot of them make their pro debut in their teens. Male manga-ka seem to start a little later, but maybe that's just the ones I've read. umf. I want to research this but I should go finish RK instead.XD
