The points I made above seem kinda redundant now, as we know Matt Smith is leaving at Christmas - sniff sniff!
Have to say I am pretty gutted, he is such an amazing Doctor! Still, I'm glad I had some warning and wasn't left with that on Christmas Day (it'd be like last year's Downton Abbey all over again!)
And thinking about the finale, and the forthcoming 50th, it definitely does make sense. I was quite surprised how they wrapped up both the River and Clara storylines so quickly, and I know you said it was for possible regeneration, but I didn't think it would come so soon. But now it makes sense.
I mean, the River and Clara storylines are very much Eleven storylines - he is definitely River's Doctor anyway, so it's fitting he's the one who says the final goodbye. And the Impossible Girl is Eleven's Clara - essentially the only Doctor who's noticed her...
And I guess the early closure of River could simply mean there's more in store for her. I think she's more likely to come back now, which is a little silver lining at least - and diminishes my fears of them pushing River aside to throw in Clara as a love interest. In fact, it makes me even less fearful of a Clara/Doctor romance, which is one comfort at least!
But I'm still gutted! I wished we'd had at least one more series, or half series, because he brings so much to the Doctor's character - laughter and pain, light and dark, happiness and sadness. And Matt is just such a good actor he pulls off all these different, often opposing, traits and moods so, so well.
Still, I'm trying to remain hopeful - I did use to think no one could replace Tennant! And at least as Moffat is still on board, he'll no doubt pick another great actor (he'll have lots to choose from).
I'm curious too what they do with the new Doctor. Each has their personality, so I wonder what will happen to the new one. And what sort of dynamics he'll have to the other characters. Clara we know is definitely back, and maybe River and the other characters too. That could be interesting...
But I'll definitely miss him! And at Christmas! Oh dear!
