Oh my goodness, YES there are tie-in novels. I am not sure whether Doctor Who Magazine is still featuring Amy and Rory in their comics, but in the US there is a standalone Doctor Who comic that has been using Amy and Rory as Eleven's companions. I'm woefully behind on the third series of the latter, but the first two had great characterization. I mean, the tie-in novels are basically glorified fanfiction, but some can be really good. My favorite is "The Glamour Chase," which gives some really good backstory to Rory. There are a few others which are good, but probably the most heartbreaking in retrospect is "Touched by an Angel," which, as you might guess, features the Weeping Angels.
Heh. Rory is DEFINITELY my favorite companion, but Amy is a pretty close second. And, to be honest, given how devoted Rory is to Amy, I probably couldn't love him as much as I do if I didn't think that he had chosen a worthy target for his affections. And by that, I mean that Amy was clearly SO devoted to him once she stopped trying to deny her feelings and doing stupid things (like kissing the Doctor). When people really hold a grudge about Amy kissing the Doctor, I do like to point out that after Rory died in CB, she never even considered the Doctor romantically. That kiss, while foolish and hurtful to Rory, was SUCH an aberration, and pretty much EVERYTHING that happens afterwards goes to show how in love Amy is with Rory.
At the same time, I also liked how their relationship, while really strong, wasn't perfect. As devastating as AOTD was, I thought that the hurt that Amy and Rory felt was absolutely believable. ESPECIALLY because each thought that they were doing what was going to be the best for the other. I still get emotional just thinking about when Rory says that he's always known that he loved her more and then Amy tells him that she was giving him up because SHE loved HIM. Urgh-stupid kids!
