Sudden musing

Just been watching a TV show about the Summer Exhibition, which I surprisingly hadn't known about before. The world's largest annual open-submission show, where anyone can put in a piece of art, though only a few will make it to the exhibition. It followed a few individuals from creating their work to finding out if they'll be rejected/accepted. This spurred me to think more about art, amateur or not, in terms of the psychology of it. It's inspiring seeing people splashing images and ideas on a canvas, totally involved in the creation of what is art for them, with different colours and mixes and methods. Not walking through a grey life, dissatisfied with their lot; at the very least, not in this aspect of their lives. A spark of soul and imagination, interpreting the world in a unique light.

I'm probably over-effusive here, but I don't care. Rejected or accepted, if someone's enthusiastic about what they do, and believes in their work, they're already lucky. And it's one of these things - the creation of all kinds of art - that can make people so fascinating.

EDIT: Talking of all things arty, Rufus Wainwright performing at Glastonbury is fabulous.
