Dear Hawkeye7,
Thank you for your email. The conservative coalition government in the UK has expressed support for marriage equality and is conducting community consultation on the matter - to my knowledge, no legislation has yet been drafted. But I appreciate David Cameron’s comments on this, and
quoted him in parliament last year.
As a vocal supporter of marriage equality, I share your disappoint that Australia has not progressed this far. The ALP’s stance on marriage equality is to allow members to vote with their conscience on the issue; contrast this to the Coalition’s binding negative vote. Personally I am in favour of amending the Marriage Act to allow individuals to wed regardless of their gender or sexuality, and I have spoken about this in Parliament on
several occasions.
I will continue to hold these views and advocate for equality.
Yours sincerely
Andrew Leigh
