Gabby: Four Below and out of Carthage

Jan 05, 2010 03:56

You tell that you've got ev'rything you want,
And your bird can sing,
But you don't get me,
You don't get me.

The once and future Virgatore stared out the window while her hands deftly fastened a holster in place, then reached into the duffel, pulled out a knife in a sheathe and buckled that onto her leg. One by one she reattached her weapons, feeling their weight settle around her, like the weight of a body when her consciousness returned from the Twilight.

You say you've seen seven wonders,
And your bird is green,
But you can't see me,
You can't see me.

The moon was bright in the sky, obscuring the stars with its light. The air that touched the window pane turned bitter cold. She was going out into that night anyway. She had awoken knowing exactly what she had to do, exactly what would happen if she went. Go and see, she thought, go and see if I've still got it.

When your prized possessions start to weigh you down,
Look in my direction
I'll be round, I'll be round.

She shifted into sight to murmur a word in the frost-poisoned air, brushing off the crankiness of the sheriff and the likely very serious threat of his gun pointed at her face. They were coming.

When your bird is broken
Will it bring you down?
You may be awoken
I'll be round, I'll be round.

Marcus Sarin fired a crossbow bolt into the face the enemy possessed, pinning her to the wooden door and giving her exactly the excuse she needed. Swiftly, she closed the distance, and pulled the can of accelerant from her jacket, in a few brief passes coating the corpse and its rider even as her fingers flicked open the modified BIC. Her face showed nothing but cool curiosity as she watched the futile attempt at escape. She fed the flames. Inside she was laughing.

You tell me that you've heard ev'ry sound there is,
And your bird can swing,
But you can't hear me,
You can't hear me.

In the light of that glorious fire, punctuated by the painful howling of the terrified, dying monster, all her shadows were chased away. She was a goddamn weapon, and she would no longer allow anyone to stop her from doing her job. Bondye could have mercy on anyone who got in her way.
