There is a rather large Asian influence here on Oahu. On December 31 I got to witness first hand what a Hawaii New Year is like, fireworks from before dusk to about 2 in the morning. Last Saturday was the Chinese New Year and is evidently quite a fun time down in Chinatown. Co-workers were encouraging me to go down for the festivities, but with little free time these days it wasn’t too high on my list.
I did find it rather funny/sad however that one of my co-workers that was going to go changed her mind. Rumors have it that she once led a rather colorful life involving perhaps drugs, alcohol and sex, but that all changed when she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Usually my days are spent at the yard and hers are spent out visiting clients so we don’t spend a lot of time socializing. Taylor and I got to meet her husband at the company Christmas party and he seemed like a nice guy.
So what does the Chinese New Year, my co-worker and Christianity all have to do with this story? Well it seems that this co-worker was going to go to the celebration, but changed her plans after her husband explained to her that the Chinese New Year was blasphemous because it’s not the Christian New Year. Sometimes I’m just amazed by the beliefs that some people have. I guess I could rant a bit about Christians stealing Pagan holidays or the fact that the Chinese civilization was more advanced then most of Europe and the Middle East for a couple thousand years, but I figure most of you already knew that.
