What is allowed for stories?
Pretty much everything as long as it’s Hawaii Five-0 focused. Stories can be gen, if there is a pairing the pairing can be het or slash. If an author wants to write RPF (real person fiction) based on the actors they can do that was well. If the author wants to write a crossover with Hawaii Five-0 and another fandom they can do that as well, as long as the story is focused on the Hawaii Five-0 characters/actors.
We won’t be turning anything away. If a story has extreme content we will ask that authors warn for it when posting, but it will still be allowed for this challenge.
Can I write a story and create art?
Yes, we do let participants sign up as both. Obviously though we don’t want authors claiming their own story to do art off so that won’t be allowed.
For Authors
What is the required length?
Stories must be a minimum of 10,000 words, there is no maximum. Stories MUST BE completed at the time of posting..
Can I signup twice or co-write a fic?
You can definitely sign up for writing two stories as long as you are sure you can complete both. You may also cowrite a fic. For cowriting please have one person sign up for the both of you. There is no limit to the number of stories you can write for this challenge, however we ask that you try not to take on too much.
Can I use a fic I've already started?
Yes, as long as the story is not fully complete and has not been appeared anywhere online (either in part or in full) you may use it in this challenge. If you have a specific example or question regarding this you can ask in the comments or by sending us an email describing your issue and we'll be able to give you an answer.
What are the checkpoints for and are they mandatory?
Author checkpoints are NOT mandatory but we will be using them to keep track of author’s progress. They work as a kind of reminders to authors and give authors a change to talk a little with others about their story. We will be keeping a spreadsheet to record the information given at these checkpoints (word count, story type).
If I need to drop out how do I do thattt?
Around the time rough drafts are due an official drop out post will be going up where authors can drop out of the challenge (comments will be screened). If you need to drop out before that please email us at hawaiibigbang@gmail.com to let us know.
What should my rough draft look like?
Your rough draft should be at least 8,000 words or 80% done. It should have a clear beginning, middle and end. This way your artist can have a full story to work with in order to create art. It does not however need to be the completed fic.
How should I submit my rough draft?
Email your rough draft in a .doc format to hawaiibigbang@gmail.com. It may take a little while for us to email you back, but we will email you with a confirmation once we've processed your information.
What should I include in my header when I submit my rough draft?

Information about how to turn in your rough draft, final draft, and how to post your story will be given closer to the deadlines for each.
What should I warn for?
Other warnings are up to you, but please note that warning for rape, dub-con, incest, graphic self-harm/suicide, underage sexual activity, and character death is absolutely mandatory. If you are unsure of what to warn for or have a question regarding a specific part of your fic please feel free to ask the mods via email or by comment. Please err on the side of caution when warning.
If you feel warning may spoil part of your fic you can place the warnings behind blacked out or whited out text using the following code:
YOUR WARNINGS Am I required to contact the artist that claims me?
Yes, absolutely. It will be up to you to send the artist the story so they can create art. You can either follow the claims post to see who claims you and contact them after, or you can wait for them to contact you.
Am I allowed to use art not made by my artist?
No, any art displayed with your story MUST be made by the artist. The only exception is if for example you want to post a banner for your story but your artist only makes a fanmix or fan video, you can check with them and see if it’s okay. If it is then you can use art made by yourself or someone else.
After posting is done you will be allowed to incorporate other art into your story. But please respect your artist and not do this during the challenge.
Does my story have to be beta read?
Yes and no, we want all stories to be looked over by a beta before posting. If you are unable to find a beta please let us know and we'll assist you (although we'd suggest posting a request for help at Hawaii Five-0 comms related to what you are writing). If you rather not have a beta or can't find one that's fine, we would just prefer if you did.
How do I post my fic?
You may post your fic on either your own personal journal, your writing journal or a personal website. The journal MUST be unlocked but can be at Archive Of Our Own, InsaneJournal, Dreamwidth, Livejournal, or JournalFen and your website must be publicly accessible. Then it should be posted to the community using our master post format as posted below. Please note that you must also post your art and mixes and link to those as well as indicated in the master post format.
Below is the master post format that you can use to post your fic. This will be posted again closer to the posting date as well.
Title: Author: Artist: Word Count: Rating: Characters/Pairings: Warnings: Summary: Link to fic master post: Link to art master post: l
Your subject line should be formatted like the following: Title (Main characters/pairings)
Example: Life’s a Beach (Kono/Buffy, Danny/Steve)
For Artists
Can I claim more than one story?
You will be able to claim only one story in the initial round of claims. After 48 hours if any stories still remain artists will be able to make a second claim out of them.
A fic has already been claimed, can I still claim it?
We want to make sure every fic gets an artist attached to it so if a fic is already claimed, please choose another one. Once every fic has been claimed at least once, then we will open claims again for double claims.
What are the requirements for art?
Art can be a drawing, a cover, a manipulation, a wallpaper, a vid, a combination of all these and anything in between. It can be based on a particular scene in the story or representative of the overall story. Artists need to make at least one piece of art for the story, but can make more than that.
What happens after I claim a story?
After you claim a story we will then send you an email with your author’s username and contact information. Please then email them to a get a copy of the story.
What is the artist checkpoint for and why is it mandatory?
We will be using the artist checkpoint to make sure that artists and authors have been in contact and that they are still on track to finish the art. It is mandatory because we need every artist to check in so we can know if pinch hitters are needed or not in advance. The checkpoint will be open for a week, if an artist doesn’t check in (or contact us through email or PM during that time or in advance) then we will assume they can’t complete the art and assign a pinch hitter artist to the story.
If I want to make a fanmix for an story what are the requirements for that?
A mix should be a minimum of 8 songs (there is no maximum) and must include cover art. Your zip file also MUST include a .txt tracklisting. Additional things such as detailed explanation of songs are encouraged but not required.
I'm available for pinch hitting, how do I let the mods know?
In the event that we need a pinch hitter for art a post will go up requesting pinch hitters. Comments will be screened and summaries/fics will be sent out via email instead of by claiming on a public post. This keeps everything anonymous. Artists can then accept or decline a pinch hit, it’s up to them.
If you have any questions, feel free to either comment here or email the mods at hawaiibigbang@gmail.com
