The image was crisp.

The clarity almost stinging her eyes, but her lips curl into a gentle smile just at the sight of him. His lengthy body standing before her. Zane’s dark hair glistened in the low light. She wished that for one moment she could reach out and touch him… She would give anything just for one more day with him… Even all the icyness in the world, even her life.

She worried that even the slightest movement would pop her imaginary bubble that she had encased herself in. But what did it matter? It was twice the agony to have him here and not be able to touch him than to have him lost to her forever.

She stretched out a single finger followed by a single hand, then a wrist and finally her arm. The tip of her finger brushed against his sunken cheeks and across his cheekbone, lightly drifting across his nose. A cold chill shook her body violently. She quickly snatched her hand back, afraid she’d done something wrong. Zane’s gold eyes lit up and a smile graced his sad features.

It was something out of a dream that she never had. The reality of the moment pressed down upon her. Her heartbeat quickened, her palms moistened under the heat that flushed her face. Her body quaked in all of its specialness; not even the special surge could keep her knees from clanking together. She stretched out her hands in front of her; it was all gone. Her nails were pink with white French tips. Her pink fleshy arms were brand new, not a scare to be seen. She skimmed her tongue over her teeth, perfectly straight, perfectly pretty-making…

Had she really just sacrificed her icyness to be just another bubblehead? Not just another bubblehead, but a bubblehead that had the one thing she wanted in this world more than being icy. Just to be with him again.

She thought about the last time she saw him. His limp body lying on a white hospital bed, his limbs hung loosely over the edge. What colour he had had in his face was drained away…

But it’s not true, she thought to herself, it can’t be… He’s right here in front of me. In the flesh.

She allowed herself to be swept up by the emotional turmoil boiling in the pit of her stomach. The storm raged inside her, tearing her apart. If he was dead, how was he here? If he was alive, why did I see his animated corpse in front of me? He looked so… alive.

Nothing made sense. She felt her sails rip in the wind and her mast break in half, leaving her ship stranded between the two conclusions.

“It’s alright,” he whispered, “I’m here.” Without a thought she wrapped her arms around him, pressing her cheek to his rib cage. His arms enveloped her trembling body. She embraced him tightly, wanting to touch every inch of his body. She wanted to verify that the breath leaving his lips was real. With an extended finger, she placed it in front of his open mouth. The air rushed out in a greedy haze before another breath was sucked in.

A pretty smile made its way onto her face. “You’re really here.”

“I really am, Tally-wa.” He pressed his lips to her forehead, spilling a warmth all over her body. Better than icy, it was warm-making. Her heart pounding louder than she had ever thought possible. The blood rushed to her head and spots began to form in her vision. Her knees shook violently as the curtain crashed around her.

“Tally? Tally-wa?” The voice was just a whisper, but it was his voice, and to Tally, that’s all that mattered.

“Zane-la?” Her voice was coarse. He rested a finger against her panting lips.

“It’s me, my Tally-wa.” He gently brushed his fingers through her tangled tresses. “It’s me.” The bed compressed beside her, and his warm body pressed against her. “You’re in my room, safe and sound.”

Her eyes slowly opened, with a long, drawn out attempt to acclimate them to morning sun that streamed in through a clear window. It was like seeing a dream of old memories as her eyes caught sight of him. “Zane,” she whispered, still avoiding the abruptness of reality. “It’s really you.” His kiss landed directly on her nose.

“Of course, who’d you expect? You’re ex-boyfriend David?”

“Partially…” Zane curled the corner of his lips upward and lifted a brow.

“Okay…” He turned his pretty face into a gesture of love and smiled down at her. With a sudden urge, she shot forward, wrapping him in her arms.

“I missed you so much,” she gasped, tears spilling down her cheeks and onto his bare chest.

“Well, I missed you too… for those ten hours we were asleep.” He stroked her hair gently with one hand, the other he wrapped tightly around Tally’s back.

“I don’t want to lose you ever again,” she whispered into his perfect ears.

“Lose me? Tally, what’s wrong with you? You are so not bubbly-making today.” He held her back at an arm’s length, studying her eyes. “Are you alright?”

“I will be.” She pulled him back into her embrace, holding him hostage for an endless moment. She could feel his heart beating within his ribcage. The blood pulsing through his thin veins. The breath that escaped his lips… It was all overwhelming. “Let’s get married,” she whispered, unable to control herself. He was silent for a nervous moment, Tally gritted her teeth and shook her head. “I am so-”

“Let’s do it.” His eyes lit up brighter than the sun at midday.

“Really?”

“Yeah, why not?”

The whole in the wall was an expert at spitting out exactly what Tally wanted. The dress came out perfectly.

A soft periwinkle that glittered in the dim light of the Town Hall.

“What would you like for an environment?”

Tally glanced over at Zane before she spoke, “The Rustie Ruins.” Zane looked down at her, his eyes full of specks of gold that shimmered like her dress. He nodded lightly and pressed her hand tighter into his.

The room shuddered in front of them. The image was blurry at first, but its clarity struck suddenly. They were atop the tallest building in the Ruins. Beneath them she could see every scrap of rusty metal, every abandon vehicle… To the other side of the tower, she could make out the glow of her own City.

A woman appeared in a white, sheath dress. She smiled at them and motioned for them to join her near the edge of the building.

“This couple has gathered here today in the hopes of the continuation of their love for one another. They have decided to forgo any further future of ‘I’ and ‘Me,’ to proceed into the future of ‘Us’ and ‘We.’ With the power that has been bestowed upon me from generations before, I now pronounce you to be married. In one soul, in one body.” They turned slowly to one another, with one last look at the splendor around them; He slipped a ring onto her finger. Red safety fireworks lit up his face. She tilted her head up to meet his loving eyes, and Zane pressed his lips gently onto hers.

“I love you,” he whispered, holding her close to his thin body. “I always will.”

His body became like air. The tighter she held onto him the faster he slipped away.

“Tally,” his voice rang out softly. It wasn’t the right voice, she realized immediately.

“David.”

“Come on, we have to get going.” He scanned her special features, realizing something was wrong. “Are you alright?”

She pulled up her sleeves to see the strands of scars rising from her white skin. She shook her head, her special stomach queasy, “Give me a minute.” Before he had a chance to interrupt, Tally’s fingers found her hoverboard. In seconds, she was soaring above everything. The Rusty Ruins were in sight, the jagged peaks of the rusting towers grew out of the distance. They had camped within minutes of the Ruins.

The building was just how she had remembered it from her dream… The rusting roof didn’t give her much to balance on. She found footing on a rusted girder and made her way to the edge of the building. Her City stood before her, glowing just like in her dream. A light twinkle caught her eye. As she bent down to examine what it was, a tear slipped from her eye, hitting the shiny, platinum ring.

She slipped it on over her finger. A ping resounded in her head.

She opened it, gritting her sharp teeth.

“Zane-la loves Tally-wa.” It was her own voice; it struck a cord deep inside.

“Zane,” she gasped.

“Message to Tally-wa: Zane-la would be crazy not to.”

With Zane’s interface ring wrapped around her finger, she stood on the edge of oblivion. Her heart shattered into pieces, yet again. With all the special strength inside her, she would return to David, but she would leave her heart here with Zane.

Dreams do Come True.
