Yeah, they're all really good points. Regardless of one's personal feelings about the characters, all of those are why it's fundamentally more complicated and less likely than some corners of fandom think. Can't imagine why you thought of me, though. :)

On a bit of a tangent, the perspective of the character's history really does seem to make a huge difference in how much potential one sees in this Doctor/Rose thing, like he's just not as alien or not as allergic-to-long-term-attachment if you haven't seen it over a long period of time. Which I guess seems obvious in retrospect, but it's one of those little things that I never expected to be such a huge culture gap between the new and long-term viewers, like thinking of the companion as more of an extended guest character than a central character and things.
