If the characters of Forever Knight played Pokémon Go (aka a fic I don’t have time to write, but also):
Nick would be Team Valor due to its ideals, and grinding from 30 to 40 would be slow but worthwhile, because it would help his teammates in raids. He might have a hard time on Discord at first, but he would pay Larry Merlin for lessons and become proficient quickly after that.
Lacroix would be Team Instinct, and in most cities, Instinct is pretty typically the lowest population, but he rallies the troops and takes a number of gyms. Nick, obviously, fights back - yes, pun about Nick fighting his instincts intended there - and a large portion of the city’s gyms are swapped between Valor and Instinct on a regular basis.
Both of them want Vachon on their team. Vachon does not care; he is playing Ingress, has been for years, would they leave him alone already? (He lies, he would play, but he’s just waiting for Tracy to start.)
Natalie does not intend to be caught up in all these shenanigans, but it does look like a lot of fun, and she has the daylight hours when she can take every gym around the precinct, so she joins Team Mystic. Which starts out pretty small, but Grace is her teammate and Grace has a pretty killer instinct. The Mystic channel in the Discord is suddenly organized as hell between the two of them.
Nick is frustrated that Nat doesn’t want to swap teams when medallions come out. They could do so much better working together! But she and Grace are nearly unstoppable together, and the Precinct has an outreach thing going on with the local school kids, and she’s not messing that up. (She has hopes of talking Tracy into playing. Someday.)
One night after sunset, there’s a gym battle and they thought they had it settled by now, that Mystic got eight hours during the day and then Valor and Instinct would battle it out at night for their eight hours of pokecoins. But someone from Mystic is taking gyms at night, and who? Still, Natalie and Grace are on their way to a late dinner - they both switched to the day shift after Natalie’s near-death experience a number of years ago, even though Nat has to wear sunglasses a lot and things just.
Nat gets an itching under her skin that she usually gets when Nick is coming for a visit, but not this time, and there’s a newly Mystic gym with a Dragonair in it. Not very high-powered, but maxed-out (50th-level!) and more elegant than a Dragonite ever would be. That, plus the itching under her skin, tells her it could only be one person.
The two of them turn around (Natalie first), and there’s Janette, hiding a smartphone so quickly that Natalie almost misses it, with a smug little look on her face, and she says something about not letting the boys get away with anything.
The two human women force Janette to confess - by which I mean “force,” as one does not really force Janette into anything, but she has been lonely for a good long while and did all this on purpose.
The boredom of immortals does not just lend itself to throwing Tarot cards into the air during the day. Sometimes it involves a lot of level-grinding. A LOT of level-grinding.
They go to dinner, Janette begs off everything but a bottle of red because she “ate already,” while Nat has a rare steak and Grace gets chicken, they swap friend codes, and then Nat and Grace introduce Janette to the local Discord group, the Mystic channel, and go remote raiding during the day. Which is good because Janette somehow didn’t have any legendaries, but Nat and Grace will FIX THAT.
But really, the thing that comes out of it is that Lacroix and Nick are VERY ANNOYED that Mystic has started taking gyms at night and they can’t sweep the city during the day, because that would mean hitting the sewers, and they’re at a tactical disadvantage, and both a former general and a former knight cannot ABIDE being at a tactical disadvantage. Team Valor and Team Instinct rallies and the three-way rivalries bursts into full-out PokeWar.
Shenanigans very likely ensue from there. (Alt spies on the team channels are only the beginning.) BECAUSE WHY NOT?
