December Talking Meme - Lipstick

Dec 02, 2020 19:15

lunabee34 asked me to talk about lipstick, which is my favorite makeup, so here's my history with lipstick, also my favorite makeup and my go-to anywhere, anytime. I would love nail polish as much, except that I cannot wear it, both for sensory reasons and because it utterly shreds my fingernails and I just don't feel up to the bimonthly manicures to get gel polish and have my regular fingernails covered up constantly.

So. Lipstick is a thing I can wear that is a pretty color, and easy, and dark or odd-colored, depending on if I'm at work or at home. I don't really wear pale lipstick, because people seem to expect that of me, so no. I like bold colors. I did have to fight my parents for it, because my dad was, uh, very conservative in his ideas of what makeup a girl should wear - pink was the only acceptable color for "good girls" - and my mom was of the mind that Her Daughter would only wear the Neutral Colors No Makeup Look.

They're so hilarious.

That's the context. Mom was into beige for me; Dad was into pinks. They meant well! I liked dark reds and anything plummy purple, back when that was all you could get. Oh, the grief I took! Once college hit, Urban Decay started and blues and dark purples and greens became available, and spread out to cheap Elf cosmetics (because I couldn't afford Urban Decay), so I wore a lot of those lipsticks instead, especially in college or to LARPs.

Mr. Havoc met me when I was wearing the tiniest black dress and really deep blue lipstick. Given that he's not a big fan of makeup on women, I must have been doing something to get past that. Maybe it was the sarcasm. But probably it was the really tiny black dress. ;)

To work, I still wear a lot of dark reds or burgundies. I'll occasionally wear a deep, deep brown, because it works on me.

I enjoy the matte long-lasting lipstick look, and I did get into lip stain when it was around, but it's not that prevalent. They've definitely improved lipstick over the years, because it's no longer a guaranteed thing that will wear off instantly, nor will it instantly chap my lips. Thank God. Or maybe it's that I'm older and I'm not forced to buy only cheap, shitty lipstick anymore.

I have a Sephora coupon and I'm looking for some new lipstick! Their store brand is pretty kickass. But I miss being able to wear it out. Especially to LARPs and gaming.
