So, the blog A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry (one of my favorite, for the title and the long-form historical analyses)
took a look at Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, and I thought, hey, video game review, I'll check it out in case we ever think of picking that one up, which we have not been doing because Ubisoft has historically been a toxic company (I'll link below).
But. I'm so glad I did, because. Wow.
Bret Devereaux, the unmitigated pedant of the blog, goes right from a scathing review of AC: Valhalla, into a gloriously wordy takedown of the white power fantasy of Nordic culture and history that this game, however inadvertently, encapsulates.
You should read it, he says it better than I could. So I'm not touching it.
Ubisoft's issues with sexual harassment and unwillingness to deal with it are thoroughly detailed in this extra-long and worth a read Bloomberg article:
Ubisoft Family Accused of Mishandling Sexual Misconduct Claims, which includes issues with keeping some earlier Assassin's Creed games a single-gender main character. I don't play them, I think from the pedantry blog that they may have changed things up a game or two ago?
But if you want the short form,
The Verge has you covered and links to a couple articles on Ubisoft's sexual harassment escapades.
