It would be the "you thought it was a supernatural menace, witches and ghosts and ancient pacts with Cthonic horrors (I mean, I love that stuff), but really they were they were CRAZYPANTS ALL ALONG!!!" genre.
You know, it can be done well, but about 90-95% of the time, it's handled poorly and also super offensively, and honest to God, I'm so tired of it being the GIGANTIC TWIST of the film.
There's that 5% where it's actually done well - Black Swan, I'm looking at you, fuck, I really loved you, can I please have all the femslash for you? - and for that reason, I'm okay with it existing as a genre.
These directors and writers have to practice somewhere, and most of these low-budget films are that, well, how are they going to get better? I mean, people do need to practice and sometimes you have to write a lot of really bad things in order to improve.

But oh, sometimes it's so frustrating watching my hundredth low-budget supernatural horror film on Amazon Prime in hopes of it being done well and then realizing it's another poorly executed CRAZYPANTS ALL ALONG! horror special from a possibly-going-someplace-possibly-not actor, writer, or director that you really want to improve. But this one is just so, so bad.
That was two hours of my life I want back.
