Ye olde days of fandom. (Today's "get off my lawn" post.)

Every time I see someone reference "ye olde days of LiveJournal," I laugh a little bit. In the grand scheme of fandom, LJ wasn't that long ago. I can reference ye olde days of Usenet, and there are plenty of fans I know who go farther back and further offline for their ye olde days of fandom.

I would have my ye olde days be offline, but. Try being in fandom when you don't have the internet and with a misanthropic, introvert mother who won't take you to cons because it's a waste of money and also people might try to talk to you there and we don't want that. At best, I would get to go to the gaming store because she would be able to wait in the car and not have to talk to anyone.

On the other hand, I can talk about ye olde days when your only hope of finding a tabletop gaming group was copying down a number on an index card at the gaming store, calling it to see if they were still meeting and at a time you could make it there, and hoping to hell that you didn't get hit on during character gen this time.
