About fandom and the ladies.

Mar 21, 2013 08:20

I think any of you who have spent enough time on this journal figured out that the fandom content here is, in large part, a love letter to the female characters, and very definitely a feminist (and anti-ism of any kind) space. That said, loving the female characters doesn't mean that I - and commenters - cannot discuss their flaws. There are plenty of ways to discuss the flaws and the narrative treatment of characters without wandering into anti-feminist territory.

Given some of the commentary recently, I thought I should point out my feelings on the matter. You won't be defriended/yanked off my circle if you don't like a specific female character. I enjoy well-rounded female characters, ones with heroic potential and with flaws. This is a journal for debate, for the positive and negative aspects of characters, not a place for polemics.

I'm not claiming to be a paragon of feminist perfection. I'm as flawed and vulnerable to mistakes as anyone. This is an ideal that I strive toward, not one that I claim to have attained.

For the record, I don't want, at the moment, to get into the whys and wherefores of what makes critique of female characters anti-feminist or just legit criticism. This also isn't an invite to hate on the ladies. This is just me making my feelings on the matter clear, since it was not obvious before.
