"Don't hold back, darling." Vala slams her fist into Adria's jaw. The girl's cry of pain wrenches at her heart. She doesn't let it show. "Tell me how you really feel."
Sam is just behind her. She and Daniel are frantically trying to solve Merlin's latest puzzle, while Cameron and Teal'c have come to either side of them. They train their weapons on Adria with set, grim faces.
"Why are you doing this, Mother?" Adria straightens as she steps back and touches her split lip. She looks at her own blood like it's something she's never seen before. Probably she hasn't. Every place except where Merlin's got some kind of higher power dampening field, she's been able to prevent her own injury.
"Stop it!" snaps Vala. She takes two steps forward and grips Adria's hair so she can wrench the girl forward. "You may be the daughter I never wanted, and you may be an incurable brat bent on galactic domination, but I am your mother, and you will listen to me." She doesn't look at Cameron or Teal'c. She's doesn't look for sympathy; she never will.
"You never wanted salva--" begins Adria.
"You will listen to me," snaps Vala, her voice low and quiet. "I never wanted to be raped by the Ori. I never wanted to be the one that brought blood and pain to this galaxy. I may have given birth to you, but you're their child."
Daniel's shout of triumph as the door opens tells her they need to leave. Now.
She shoves Adria away as she draws her zat in one quick movement. "Blood will tell." She fires once, and Adria crashes to the floor. No one else fires as Vala stares down at the crumpled figure of her daughter.
"Vala--" Sam's voice is impatient.
Vala slips her zat back into its holster. She doesn't look at anyone. She blinks once, and maybe her eyes are a little brighter, but only for a minute. Then they're through the door and running toward the next clue from Merlin.
Damn the Ori.
