Today I took a road trip to the Jersey Shore with Johanna, Dan, and Jen. Abby is staying there with her parents and her friend Jess. Much fun was had; I was called into shore and berated by a lifeguard for swimming out too far, and Johanna and Jen were "attacked" by seagulls.
But the best part was the ride back, where we were stuck in stopped traffic for 45 min, before trying to get back another way, which ended up taking us back to THE EXACT SPOT ON THE ROAD WHERE WE'D GOTTEN OFF BEFORE!
It was fun. I mean, really. The ride back was great, getting lost and all. There were crazy crazy hijinks. Well. I mean, not really. But we did invent and play the pianist game. And the music was prime. And the conversation was pretty interesting. Dan has some interesting theories/questions about why we begin and maintain relationships. He is... either jaded, or analytical, or practical in approaching the topic. It is different and thought-provoking.
When I got back, I got an IM from Jeff, telling me that Gil has been in the U Penn hospital due to heart disease and he needs a transplant.
For those of you who don't know Gil, he is the most fantastic 6 foot plus, crazy, wombat appreciating, Israeli, theater tech, Summer Institute for the Gifted loving, mofo you have ever seen.
The summer camp I went to was for ages 9 through 17. Legend has it that Gil actually stay 3 extra years because he just loved SIG that much, and because everyone else just loves him that much too. He would dress up in full real body armor sometimes on campus, because he was the black knight in this Renaissance Fair right during the rest of the summer.
And its sort of weird to think of him being sick, or in a hospital, because he always seemed kind of impervious. I don't want to sound melodramatic about it or anything, because I'm sure he'll be fine. It's just, this guy would pick us up and carry us around. He'd give 15-year-olds airplane rides. I mean, he really was our knight.
So I think I'm going to visit him tomorrow. And Jeff is going to as well. And, because Jeff is way better at keeping touch with people than I am, it looks like a slew of people might be coming too. Which will be good.
Okay, its been a long day. And this has been, by my standards, a long entry. I'm going to sleep.
