OK, so not even by the calendar is it summer yet. Still, it should be a little bit warm in June, shouldn't it? Instead the fog was rolling in, the air was filled with mist (which is bad for the hairstyle but admittedly good for the complexion) and the "real feel" temp was somewhere in the high 40's/low 50's.
Even with all the cold and damp, my heart was feeling warm, inspired and bright because I was barrelling down the highway to the Music Festival to see my hubby and to see the Judds.
It's no secret to y'all that I have long loved country music (along with classical, jazz, some pop, most rock, flamenco guitar and odd world music, etc.) This night belonged to the Judds (Naomi and Wynonna) as they make their way across the country on their Last Farewell tour. It was a repeat event for Zac and I having had the adventure of being invited on Wy's tour bus back when he was about 11. We were lucky enough to be able to be part of a pre-concert meet and greet and I brought the picture from way back when. I said it then and I will say it now. There is no picture that will ever do justice to how truly, stunningly beautiful Wynonna Judd is. I don't know why it doesn't translate to photos, or perhaps it is that I see her spirit shining just as much as her beauty, but she is all kinds of gorgeous. This time around my stepsister Von was also along for the adventure and the first thing she did after we left the meet and greet was turn to me and say, "ohmygosh, she is STUNNING!" Thank you! Corroboration!
We did have our picture taken by one of the Festival's wonderful staff and if I get a copy I'll post it. Meanwhile, the concert was wonderful! They sang their hits from when country was a lot simpler and lot more country. Lots of singing along required on the chorus of "Grandpa Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days" and "Why Not Me?" and - of course "Love Can Build a Bridge" which was, of course, the only song they could sing to end the concert. Their set design was a perfect blend of the latest multimedia along with beautiful lighting design and old fashioned slide shows. Stage patter between Wy and Naomi was bright and fun. I think people really underestimate Naomi but she is a gifted songwriter. Wy had full command of that stage, singing and playing guitar and being the center of attention. I think that's why she reads so tall and strong when in fact she is pretty and small.
I was glad Wynonna also sang a few of her solo hits, "She Is His Only Need" and "Only Love" were highlights for me. I only wish they had sung my favorite "Rock Bottom" - that song has the best lines "When you hit rock bottom, you got two way to go - straight up or sideways....things are tough all over, but I got good news, when you get down to nothing you got nothing to lose, beneath rock bottom there's good solid ground and a dead end street is just a place to turn around." Come on, that's classic - you know it!
We sped back home through the night, grateful for the heater in the car and humming pieces of the songs we'll remember for a while. And, just like the last time we saw Wynonna, when Z asked if we could stop for Chicken McNuggets on the way home, it was my treat to mark an evening of music, fun and love.
OXO
