He gives her a half smile and tilts his head to one side. "Well, I'd hate for the intrigue to be lost. Because underneath that beautiful mask of annoyance, I think you like the vagueness and mysteriousness. On some level, at least."

She raises an eyebrow at that and mimics his headtilt. "Then that makes two of us."

And in response, he'll mimic her raised eyebrow with one of his own. "Oh?" He also may lean in a little closer, though his feet remain planted in place.

"Oh, come on," Tess replies softly, keeping her gaze locked on his. "You're getting a kick out of knowing more about us than we know about you, certainly, but you like it even more when someone can surprise you."

"Surprise me?" Darkseid inquires, his expression remaining the same as he takes a moment to search her eyes. "Surprise me how?"

She just smiles back at him for a moment.

"I'm sure someone's managed to accomplish it, now and then."

He half shrugs. "I don't often let people surprise me, as I don't often like surprises." He pauses and regards her again. "Though I suppose I would, if it were a pleasant surprise."

Tess studies his face intently before returning her gaze to his. "That sounds like a terribly safe and easy existence. Surprises are half the fun."

Safe and easy? Hardly. Darkseid is simply used to being the one in control, and in his case, that doesn't often allow for many surprises.

"Having fun can't always be a priority," he tells her, running his own gaze over her face slowly before looking into her eyes once more. "But that is why I'm here now."

"That's right. This is supposed to be about fun and here I am, dragging the conversation into the serious." Tess tilts her head slowly in the opposite direction. "Shame on me."

"I don't mind," he says softly and slowly, another smile appearing on his face. "I'm quite interested in the things you have to say, actually. Though I'm open to anything you think may be more enjoyable."

"I see the flattery has started after all." Tess grins and steps around him, letting her arm brush against his as she moves past and continues to wander toward the couches.

"Actually, I'm interested in what sorts of things you find enjoyable, besides listening to what I have to say." She stops and turns to face him again. "Perhaps I can accommodate some of them."

He turns away briefly to take a small sip from his abandoned drink before setting it down on the table once more.

"And what about your own enjoyment?" he asks softly, facing her again and slowly wandering a bit closer to where she's stopped. "It was agreed, after all, that we would both be having fun tonight."

His answer was exactly what she'd been expecting: deflection. Tess can't help but laugh a little, softly.

"I think as hostess it's only fair that I ensure my guest is having a good time before I think about myself."

Darkseid steps closer, the corners of his mouth still curled into that small smile. "Mmm, but perhaps we can find enjoyment in the same things. What do you think?"

Tess pretends to think that over and then nods. "I think that sounds like a very suitable compromise. I still defer to my guest for his choice of... activity."
