“Derek?”

“What’s wrong?” Derek could hear the pain, the fear in Stiles’ voice when he picked up the phone, and he didn’t need to be told that something was up with his friend.

“I’m sorry to call you, I just…I tried Scott and his mom, and they’re not answering, and I tried driving but I’m just not…I can’t…I need you to come and get me and take me to the hospital…please, Derek. Please. I’m sorry to ask, but my dad’s in the hospital, he got shot on the job, and I’m so scared, Derek. I’m so scared.”

“I’ll be right there.” Derek hung up the phone. Stiles was in danger. This was his chance to prove himself to the boy, his chance to show Stiles that he wasn’t a horrible person, and maybe even his chance to get Stiles’ attention in the way that he wanted it.

He was in his car and driving only seconds later, and it wasn’t long after that that he was outside of Stiles’ house. The boy was waiting, sitting on the porch, tears streaming down his face, and he practically ran to the car. He curled up on the seat, his head resting against the window, and Derek didn’t say anything, he just drove with one hand, and with the other, reached out and gently squeezed Stiles’ shoulder, trying to let the boy know that he was there if Stiles decided that he needed him…which, given their history, Derek didn’t think was very likely, at least not right now.

“Do you want me to come in with you?” he asked finally when they were outside the hospital.

“You don’t have to do that.” Stiles got out of his car and ran inside, giving Derek his answer in his gesture. He hadn’t said no. He had given Derek an out, and that was nice of him, but the fact that he hadn’t said no told Derek that Stiles didn’t want to be alone, that he wanted him to come in, even if he wasn’t willing to say it out loud…so he parked the car and went inside, ignoring the nurse asking him who he was seeing as he barged through, smelling his way to the right room.

“Hey.” He leaned in the doorway, watching as Stiles sat by his father’s bed. The sheriff was asleep, but he looked peaceful.

“He’s alright,” Stiles said, turning to look at Derek. “He’s sleeping now, he’s stable. They want to keep him overnight for observation, but he’s going to be alright.”

“Good.” Derek walked over and pulled up a chair, putting his arm loosely around Stiles’ shoulders. “He’s lucky, you know,” Derek stated.

“How do you mean?” Stiles asked, his voice still cracking from the crying.

“He’s got you for a son.” Derek smiled.

“Look, if you’re going to patronize me, just go,” Stiles started. “I don’t need-”

“Stiles, Stiles, Stiles, no, that’s not what I meant.” Derek shook his head. “I mean that you’re strong, you’re kind, you’re fiercely loyal. Anyone would be lucky to have a son like you to look after them.” He smiled. “I’ve seen the way you take care of him, make sure he doesn’t eat too many curly fries. You care about people so much, Stiles, and they care about you just as much.” He leaned down, kissing Stiles on the cheek. “You just don’t see it.” He stood up, confident that Stiles would be alright knowing his dad was fine. “But when you do see it, and you want to see more of it, give me a call.”

As Derek walked out of the room, Stiles reached up, touching his cheek where Derek had kissed it. He smiled gently to himself, and reached for his phone.
