Hum...kind of been in a funk the last week or so, but am doing to be doing my best to come back to reality for what little time I have left with all of you guys out there. I realise I'm your Mum, but I do have some advice that might come in handy.

1) Don't tell anyone you're American. You will be finding out just how hated Americans are abroad right now as it is, and soon enough. It's not safe to readily admit it in many places. Think I'm kidding? :/ I'm not. Unless it's an official you're dealing with, tell them you're Canadian.

2) Keep your passport well guarded. Only present it at the last possible moment and put it away quickly.

3) Leave behind a copy of your passport (colour copy) with someone you trust in the US in case you lose yours.

4) I know you have to register with the local police, but register with the nearest US Consolate so they know where you are in case of an emergency.

5) Lower your voice an octave. Don't speak loudly. Don't call attention to yourself.

6) You know the language, but listen out for the intonations native German speakers use with certain phrases. It could make a lot of difference in how you're perceived.

7) Have fun. ;)

8) Email your Mum at regular intervals.

9) Remember I love you.
