Does anyone know if it is possible to run two copies of MS OFFICE simultaneously? I acquired a German copy today, but also need the English version.

I don't think you can...you could try installing both into separate directories, but Office drops enough files into system folders and other specific locations that it probably wouldn't work. It's possible that the language specific files would be stored in office's home directory (that is, provided they're the same version, everything else would be fine) - but I doubt it.

I've tried doing this before, albeit without installing the new software. All it left me was word sans proofing abilities for the German text. When I change the settings based on the document, do you have any idea how this would work, or would the install act just as if the proofing tools are being installed?

When you install Office, you should have the option to install additional language tools... I've seen it before, but I don't use Office (except at work), so I haven't installed it in a while.
