The more I see those ridiculously offensive 'protect marriage' signs, the more apprehensive I get. A man and a woman, a boy and a girl. How many marriages (besides my parents', ironically) really include a man and a woman and a daughter and a son? America has got single-parent families, families with no kids, families with 12 kids, all daughters, one child, re-marriage and step-kids, etc! That symbol of a man and a woman, a boy and a girl is so limiting and demeaning, seeming to discount any marriage that doesn't fit into that frame. Seeming to say that to be American, a marriage must fit that profile. (It is also besides the fact that these signs show women in dresses and the whole family in the same color, as if it was pre-civil rights movement!)
Please do NOT vote 'yes' on Measure 8 just because you question the legitimacy or morality of homosexuality. These types of things should be left to the person involved and God, right? It's not your job to make something illegal because you consider it to be a sin.
By voting 'yes' on Measure 8, you are not just making a statement about your disapproval of homosexuality, you are making a statement to show your disapproval of human rights. Whatever your beliefs are regarding homosexuality and marriage, your answer should not be to deny a person their rights.
Finally, voting 'no' on Measure 8 will not make things confusing for children. Whether or not homosexuals can get married, partners will still be together, and some will still have kids. By allowing them to legally get married, it will only cement these families and make things easier for their children.
As we near the election, Californians, please consider Measure 8 very carefully, and consider the power you have to ensure the legality of family diversity. We are all different, and richer for this difference. As Americans --and Californians!-- it is our duty to continue to allow diversity to spread.
Please vote 'No' on Measure 8.
