Christmas has thrown up in their living room.

Alice stands hopelessly on the couch, far out of reach of the mess that covers their floor. Hatter has gotten overly excited about this Christmas business, and gone out and bought all the decorations he could find, ranging from small to huge and beautiful to ugly and usually ending with downright ridiculous. Her boyfriend is currently sitting on the coffee table, wrestling with a string of lights (they're brand new, how on earth has he already managed to tangle them?) and singing “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” loudly and somewhat out of tune over the radio playing from the kitchen. He is obsessed with Christmas music, loving that there is a whole genre dedicated to one single day of the year.

She really has no idea what to do. While they've been living in their apartment for nearly six months, they only just finished completely unpacking a few weeks ago, and Alice has barely had time to adjust to the freedom of a home empty of boxes labeled “Hall Closet” or “Hats - Box 2 of 7.” Now there are decorations and ornaments and wrapping papers and ribbons and pine needles for God's sake all over everywhere and she is about to scream.

Loudly.

Instead, she looks at Hatter. The grin is large on his face and it shines in his eyes. At first she thought he had only been so enthused about Christmas for her sake, but he really is fascinated and thoroughly enjoying the season. He is rarely sad and hardly misses Wonderland at all, but she still feels she owes it to him to make sure he enjoys her world, since he left his behind. For her.

He seems to have noticed her gaze, for he looks up and catches her eye. He smiles happily and holds up the now tangle-free lights, standing to wrap them around the large tree in the corner by the door. He's no longer singing, only humming along with the radio, and there is a jaunty bounce in his step. His hat hangs precariously on the back of his head, and he is radiantly happy.

Alice smiles to herself, realizing that no matter how much crazy this man brings into her life, she will tolerate it all just to see him here, with her, in their home, for the rest of their lives. She comes down from her perch on the arm of the couch, steps around and over stockings, boxes, and ceramic Santas, makes her way over to the silly man by the tree. She wraps her arms around his waist, and feels him sigh and turn in her arms, wrapping his around her in turn. She smiles up at him, righting his hat.

“I love you,” she says softly. He smiles, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips.

“I love you, sweet. Merry Christmas.”

We did a little early Christmas with some extended family today, and it got me in the mood to write some Christmas fluff. Enjoy! Comments are greatly appreciated!
