Labeling history

If you had to condense the history of 20th century immigration in Australia to 3 or 4 paragraphs, with a theme per paragraph, what would your themes be? Remember this period covers two world wars, the cold war, a period of massive migration associated with these events, the initial welcoming of boat people in the ‘70s through to recent detention policies. And that’s hardly scratching the surface.

At present my thinking is something like: Assimilation, Multiculturalism and then I don’t have a name for my third theme. It has to convey a period of conservatism, discrimination, fear, and detention. Protectionism? (is that a word?) Isolationism? Am I being too dramatic?

PS the title for the music I’m listening to is a happy coincidence, gotta love the Waifs!

museums stuff, history stuff
