So my video game project is back under way. It's partly to ensure this is something I want to do, partly to build skills, and partly to develop a portfolio. Anyways, for those who don't know the basic premise is that it's a tactics type game, except instead of like 6 guys you'll have more like 6X6 guys in a battle, except the 6 will be your dudes and the 30 will be ai controlled squadmates, who you get to order around and stuff.
By the end of this month, I hope to have a graphical nightmare that showcases the basic gameplay- including the overland sections. That gives me about two weeks to finish programming the thing. Right now I have a grid, and I can move a guy on it. I figure by ignoring things like innovative combat and focusing on basically recreating FF1 (hp, attack, defense... yep we're good) I can get through this. This month is basica functionality. Gameplay is next. Graphics is like 6 months from now.
Anyway, the overland portion is pretty interesting. It's something of a cross between Heroes of Might and Magic and X-com. There's character progressions, but not simple level-based ones, and there's AI recruitment stuff going on, with magical research and base development thrown in to boot.
Anywho, hopefully sometime in the next 3 days I'll get the basic engine up and running. I'd like to have some time to make the first iteration actually entertaining to play.
