Micropayments? I can’t see myself paying for news stories.

Clearly, then, the payments you're envisaging aren't sufficiently micro. Personally I wouldn't mind being automatically billed 1p for any day on which I accessed one or more pages within a reputable news site...

(Though, of course, my favourite news site is BBC News, and I already pay for that.)
