what I've been up to

Alright, so while I was observing the other night, I wrote the long-winded version of what Mike and I did last Friday and Saturday, and ran out of steam before I got to Sunday. I'm going to try to write a sane-length version now.

Friday night I was giving a tour of the observatory after the planetarium show when a severe thunderstorm came through. They even set off the tornado sirens, although our county wasn't under a tornado watch, the next one west was. At home, our power was knocked out and was still out on Saturday morning.

Saturday, Mike and I went to Cedar Point. Yes, we celebrated our anniversary at an amusement park riding roller coasters. We went to Busch Gardens on our honeymoon, so it ties in. We had a great time, it's still early enough that the lines weren't too bad. When we got home, the power was back.

Sunday after church we rented a canoe on the River Raisin, about 40 min north of here into Michigan (we also went kayaking on our honeymoon, so this also tied in). We took what was described as an 8 mile trip, we were driven to a boat launch and rowed downstream back to the canoe rental place. It was a lot of fun, and we saw a lot of cool wildlife. Mostly very small turtles sunning themselves on logs or rocks, also red-winged blackbirds. And at one point we startled a mammal, which I didn't get too good a look at as it panicked into the water. According to the girl at the rental place it was probably a muskrat, although there are sometimes rumors that the river still has mink in it. It did look longer, skinnier and sleeker than I'd expect for a muskrat, but I didn't see it for all that long and I'm not an expert on muskrats. We took a few pictures, but they're still on the camera and Mike has it, so I can't post them.

Sunday evening we went out to dinner at the Real Seafood Co., one of the fancy restaurants on Toledo's "Docks". We've done so for most, if not all, of our anniversaries. Yum.

And then Monday morning Mike had to leave at 7am and drive down to the plant in south-central Ohio, almost four hours away, for the whole week. I don't think I posted about it before, but he and his co-worker are being sent down there much of the time this summer to work on a project. Bah, humbug, I say. At least it hasn't been as much as they originally said, at first Mike and his coworker were going to be alternating weeks down there, but it's only been one week in three so far, not every other. Mike takes a company car so I'm not left without transportation all week, and I've been fending for myself okay. On Monday evening I went to a church meeting that included dinner (a representative of the bishop was sent to tell us about a program), I carpooled with others from my church and so had company. On Tuesday a big group from church went to the MudHens game, which was fun even though our team lost. And Wednesday night was my shift in the telescope. So I haven't been stuck moping alone at home, which is good. And today Mike comes back! Yay!
