The List, she is
here.
Let's go through my favorites, month by month. I am not responsible if you feel compelled to sing "Calendar Girl" in the process.
January -- Once Upon a Time in the North, by Philip Pullman.
February -- All four of the Stuart Quartet by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris. (Note: Don't read The Painted Veil in February, of all months; the book's plenty depressing at any time of year, at least do yourself a favor and pick a sunnier, cheerier month.)
March -- The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, by Randy Shilts.
April -- The three No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books (Tears of the Giraffe, Morality for Beautiful Girls, and The Kalahari Typing School for Men).
May -- The Little Stranger, by Sarah Waters. Who I met on the first of the month. It's been 7 months, holy shit.
June -- June was a great reading month all-around. Out of those, the absolute best were Perfumes, Push, Caramelo, and the two Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin.
July -- July was great, too, but for the sake of simplicity: Santa Olivia, by Jacqueline Carey and The Other Wind, by Ursula K. Le Guin.
August -- The Blue Castle, by L. M. Montgomery.
September -- Moloka'i, by Alan Brennert.
October -- Lessons from the Fat-o-sphere, by Kate Harding and Marianne Kirby. Even if it was a case of preaching to the choir.
November -- Two words: TAMORA. PIERCE.
December -- Four Five words: TAMORA. PIERCE. AND. SEBASTIAN. BARRY.
