I take back my determination that everyone should read it. Not that I completely hated it by the end, exactly, but if Clare isn't a Mary Sue (I can't wholly convince myself either way -- the coincidences are many but there did seem to be some attempt to flesh her out, even if it did fall spectacularly flat for me) then Alba definitely is.
The name-dropping got insanely annoying halfway through (we get it, yay punk). And all the descriptions of Clare's sketching or papermaking. I know specificity is good for writing but when you overdo it you just look like you're showing off.
So, yeah. Not as fabulous as I'd first thought. Most of the prose is nice, though.
