This is seriously a great idea for a community since I often feel singled out amongst friends for liking the characters no one else does and so being becoming their champions. ^^
One of the series I've recently gotten into is Naruto, a shounen manga/anime about ninjas if you're not familiar. ^^ One of my favorite characters is the basic female lead, Sakura. (Along with Kakashi and Naruto...) Sakura is twelve years old, has pink hair, and an alter ego that tends to yell out, "All right, dammit!" a lot of the time.
But she's treated horribly by most fans of Naruto and even more so in fan fiction. I can understand the aversion, honestly. In the beginning, she seems like the typical bubbly-headed idiot girl with a crush on one of the guys (i.e. Sasuke). She never fights much and is constantly having to be protected. But as the anime progresses she's gone through some remarkable personality changes. She's realized she has to fight for herself and get stronger, and she's been really tough lately. I consider her transition admirable.
And her crush on Sasuke is more than a shallow child's crush. She really genuinely cares about him.
Still, most people cast her off as the Sasuke groupie and treat her awfully. I think one reason can be that Naruto, at least from what I've viewed on FanFiction.net, is only getting attention from slash fans. And I don't think that's fair considering there's really no hints toward slash in the series aside from the very small, very miniscule ones that all manga/anime has between characters. It's not to say I'm not a fan of slash. I write it too. But in Naruto it doesn't work for me.
So I always feel that for the sake of hooking up Sasuke with Naruto, the main character, Sakura is treated like an obstacle and only in the way. It's so obnoxious. (And yes... I'm a Sasuke+Sakura fan...)
That's all. ^_^ *waves hi to everyone* Oh... and Miaka is a great character too. =P
