Oh, Puella Magi Madoka Magica fandom. What a way to take a show with lots of gray shades of morality and thought and try turning it into a flat caricature with only black or white.
And specially, what a way to be misogynistic and whiny.
So who is this girl? She is Hitomi Shizuki. She's a fairly polite and soft-spoken student, friends with Madoka and Sayaka, who once got brainwashed into commiting suicide with other people and then was saved by them. So why is such a harmless-looking chara getting so much haaaaaate...?
For the oldest reason ever: she dares to have a crush on the same guy Sayaka loves. And for another one: unlike many other girls in her same situation, she ACTS on it by first telling Sayaka "hey, if you keep waiting and don't make a move, I'd rather make mine".. and then doing it.
To many people, this equals to "whore", "bitch", "bad friend", "traitor", etc. Not to mention, Sayaka was already in a pretty low point of her life due to being a Magical Girl and suffering the downsides...
But wait! Things aren't so simplistic as you people think it is.
- Hitomi is not a slut. She has feelings for a SINGLE person, and that's Kyousuke Kamijou. She doesn't sleep around, doesn't use sex as manipulation, etc. - she only likes one single guy, and that's it. Calling her a slut is misogynistic and hypocritical, not to mention it doesn't even apply to her personality-wise.
- Hitomi didn't steal anyone's man. Kamijou isn't a prize to be won, he doesn't have the "Sayaka Miki" name branded on him, and he does NOT belong to anyone. She has right to ask him out as much as Sayaka does. Belive it or not, the fact that Sayaka chose to use her wish to heal his arm (
which Mami actually *warned her against* in the manga adaptation) does NOT give Sayaka any kind of ownership of Kamijou's penis.
- Oh, and by the way. Love of any kind doesn't work like that, and TBH seeing people treat Kamijou as if he was forced to date Sayaka because she healed him (does he even know she used her wish for his sake, anyway?) is creepy. I hate the "s/he owes him/her a pityfuck" shit like burning: it completely cheapens love in itself and makes the people coming up with it look like they are Nice Guys/Girls projecting their own fucked-up thoughts on poor Sayaka. Dude/dudettes, stop making Sayaka look like a self-serving idiot who only healed Kamijou to have him as her love slave. She's more complex than that.
- Back in gear: Hitomi is NOT a traitor to her and Sayaka's friendship. Maybe she did it in the wrong way, but giving Sayaka a heads-up about her interest in Kamijou instead of going after him behind Sayaka's back while knowing her feelings for him is actually a decent thing to do. Doing otherwise would've been the real "treason", and had Sayaka been the one Kamijou choose, Hitomi would likely take it as well as she could. Since Sayaka didn't confess, Hitomi thought that it was her time to do it already. She's a 14-year-old girl and most likely was waiting for Sayaka to make the first move for a while, she's not necessarily gonna take the super perfect option at once.
- Hitomi does NOT know anything about the Puella Magica deal. She simply could have NOT known the horrifying consequences that making the deal with Kyuubey brought to Sayaka herself, and apparently doesn't seem to remember that she was once the target of the witch Kirsten/H. Elly. She may have been more understanding if Sayaka had told her she had her reasons to not confess right away, and specially if she knew about the Witches.
- Had Hitomi nod done anything, Sayaka would have snapped anyway sooner or later. The poor girl already was in a really bad situation due to the downsides of being a Magical Girl, and the Kamijou/Hitomi situation was the cherry on top. But had not Hitomi confessed? It wouldn't have really changed anything. Being a Magical Girl is already a bad deal, one that sooner or later would have finished with Sayaka becoming Octavia von Seckendorff and being at the receiving end of a mercy kill by another magical girl (and then later, rinse, repeat). The only real "influence" was that Sayaka's fall from grace was sped up for story purposes, but there would have been something else around if Hitomi didn't confess to Kamijou. Kamijou straightforwardly rejecting Sayaka's feelings? Kamijou, Sayaka's family, Hitomi or others dying at the hands of a witch? Madoka becoming Kriemhild Gretchen the witch first? Kyouko, Madoka and/or Homura dying? There are many possibilities, the Hitomi/Kamijou/Sayaka love triangle was just one of them.
So! If Hitomi Shizuki's not your mug of chocolate, that's okay. Calling her "whore" or "man-stealing bitch" for acting on her feelings and screwing up without either wanting to or knowing it is not okay. And blaming her for what has been going on with Sayaka? VERY NOT OKAY.
