Or let's say the Jerk Ass character becomes a decent guy when he's interacting with his elderly grandma or younger brother.

Tsukasa from Hana Yori Dango. His transformation from a jerk with the shortest temper in Japan to a responsible and reasonably calm person because of Tsukushi is a huge part of the story. However, unlike Orihime in Bleach, this is made very clear that without Tsukushi, he flips out and reverts to his old violent self without her.

It does exist, though not usually in the way that fandom likes to think it does. What tends to boggle me is that people who take this stance with Orihime, often pair her with someone who ends up being the same type of person. Ishida "deserves" Orihime for being able to protect her better than Ichigo. He has someone drag her away from a fight that she wants to participate in, because he thinks it's not her place to be fighting. That's usually hand-waved as him looking out for her safety. Ichigo identifies himself as a protector, yet when he does it, it's a character flaw for both him and Orihime.
TL;DR, if you're going to make it an issue with one character, don't squee when another one does the same thing.
