Intro.
So I was reading the archives of this comm and noticed quite a few members posting their favourite hated characters. Here are mine. The main fandoms are Naruto, Bleach and Sailor Moon (I love the Harry Potter books, but never got involved in fandom because I was too scared).
Sailor Moon
- Ami Mizuno / Sailor Mercury:: she gets flak for being a tactician rather than a fighter, but she's as much an asset to the Inners as Jupiter, Venus and Mars. She might have defensive powers mainly, but she can hold her own in battle just as much as the other senshi. Anyone remember the Nehelenia filler where she was teamed with Uranus, and how she basically saved the day by working out that the Nehelenias were clones and telling Uranus where to aim? Or her fight with Fisheye in the manga? She gets the Sue accusation, but she's so not - she's shy and a bit standoffish at first, and her parents splitting up hurt her badly. And I have a soft spot for nerdy characters.
- Mamoru Chiba / Tuxedo Mask: I admit I dislike Mamoru in the anime because of the R break up plot - it seemed way OOC for me - but I think the bashing he gets in the manga is unjustified. He's not some perfect Gary Stu. He's flawed and has little confidence in his own powers and worries that he can't protect Usagi.
- Michiru Kaiou/ Sailor Neptune: I saw one post in here bashing the crap out of Michiru and calling her a Sue, and it angered me because she is not a fucking Sue! All the senshi are flawed, her included. Takeuchi did find Neptune hard to write, but it's not like she's perfect at all. She's reserved and a bit cold, she has a cruel streak, she gets Worfed a fair bit in the anime (like when she was shot down by Eudial's trap, or when Nehelenia tried to use her as a human shield and Mars had to bail her out), and her abilities aren't perfect. Out of the Outers, she's the only one who doesn't kill any of the Death Busters (apart from a random daimon), and she gets a new attack in the Stars manga but fails to kill Sailor Iron Mouse with it, and it takes the Starlights to deal with her. Plus you can't call her a Sue and then attribute all these flaws to her. I actually like her devotion to Haruka and their cause, and I can see why she gets pissed off with the Inners - the Outers are older, have a different role and different ideals, so it's natural they'd clash. She does thaw out eventually and is as willing to put her life on the line for Usagi and the world as anyone else is - after all, Usagi is her princess and her commander. She's actually very kind to Usagi in the anime before she finds out who Usagi really is. Hell, she let her have a go on her violin. And IIRC, Uranus is the stronger of the two. Speaking of which, I hate how some people think Neptune is Uranus' bitch and/or lives in her shadow. She might be the femme of the pairing, but she's very much her own person.
Bleach
- Chad: I've seen quite a lot of Chad hate recently and it annoys me. Chad does seem to be on the receiving end of the Worf Effect quite a lot - most recently, it was against Yammy - and I appreciate he's a bit monosyllabic at times, but I think he's great. He's a big softie, but he's also just as brave as any of Ichigo's other mates, and he's not as dumb as people think he is. He's actually quite academic, IIRC. I'm hoping he recovers soon cos I'd like to see him in action again. He reminds me a bit of another hated character I love, Chouji Akimichi (see below).
- Renji Abarai: another character who seems to get Worfed a lot. He can be brash and impulsive and he was a bit of a dick at first, but he's a decent guy at heart, and he cares about Rukia a lot. If Rukia doesn't get it on with Ichigo, I'd be happy for her to end up with Renji.
- Mayuri Kurotsuchi: I can see why a lot of people hate him, and he's done some horrific things, but I have a bit of a soft spot for him because he's so cartoonish at times. Hence why, in my recaps in capslock_bleach, I give him a German accent. I thought he was wicked in the fight against Szayel, and he also has some of the funniest lines in the manga. Plus his research is important to Seireitei, which is pretty fucked up in general - Mayuri is a sadist, yes, but Seireitei must bear some responsibility itself for allowing Urahara to get him out of jail and for allowing him to be in a position of authority. I have a feeling he might have quite a big role in Bleach soon.
Orihime Inoue:: let me state that I ship IchiRuki. However, I'd like to assure the Orihime fans here that there ARE IchiRuki fans who like her, and I am one of them. The bashing she gets is utterly ridiculous at times. The poor girl has every right to be broken and upset, given the horrific crap Aizen and Ulquiorra pulled on her. I would like to see her get stronger and use her offensive abilities too, but I have faith that she'll be OK in the end. I also dislike how people bash her for being gentle and kind and a bit of a pacificist. It's the Real Women Don't Wear Dresses syndrome, that characters who aren't aggressive combatants types are useless and weak. And Rukia does NOT hate Orihime, and vice versa. I'm sick of the two of them being pitted against each other. Rukia LIKES Orihime and IIRC even admires her.
Naruto
- Kankuro: I've already stated my thoughts on him.
- Ino Yamanaka: she is NOT a braindead bimbo. She's very intelligent. Remember the hair trap? She's as much an asset to Team 10 as the lads are, and she cares about them a lot (and they her - Shikamaru stated that were Ino to die, he and Chouji would avenge her). Yes, she was mean to Chouji at first, but she also went to visit him in hospital in the Rescue Sasuke arc and was really happy to learn he was out of danger. And I'm sick of her being called a slut because she wears a short skirt and is flirtatious. I'm hoping she makes like her father and becomes an interrogator, because she's suited to that kind of job. Just because she's not as combat-orientated as the others doesn't mean she's useless.
- Hinata Hyuuga: I used to hate her, but did a 180 on her lately. Yes, she is shy, but so fucking what? Her dad treated her like crap when she was a kid, it's understandable she'd have little confidence. Standing up to Neji and running into battle to help Naruto were both MAJOR steps for her, and she was right to ignore Kiba and not forfeit the match. In the latter case, she herself knew she had little chance against Pein, but kudos to her for getting off her arse and going in there. Oh, and she's not fat. She just wears a big coat. FFS. And no, fanbrats, she and Sakura do not hate each other. Sakura saved her life, Hinata is far too kind and gentle to harm Sakura and has never shown any animosity or hate towards her (and vice versa), and she wasn't exactly yelling "BITCH GET YOUR HANDS OFFA MAH MAN" when Sakura hugged Naruto.
- Sakura Haruno: don't get me started. She's called a bitch, an abuser (because Naruto's such a poor little abuse victim), useless, weak and a 'man'. She gets bashed for being weak in Part 1 and bashed for gaining superhuman strength (because she worked for it under Tsunade, who trained her very hard - it's not like she gained the ability overnight). She gets bashed for getting in the way of NaruHina and NaruSasu. She was bashed for 'doing nothing' in the Pein arc, even though she was in the fucking hospital healing people, and for crying when her village was destroyed. And then there was Chapter 469. She's also bashed for her tit size, which irritates me immensely because I don't think having big tits is a requirement for being a good shinobi, and it just shows how shallow you are if you only read Naruto to perv on some drawings.
- Chouji Akimichi: my favourite character next to Kankuro and Shikamaru. He always gets bashed for being fat, even though it's stated that he HAS to be fat and eat a lot because of the nature of his clan's jutsu. He's one of the few genuinely nice characters, and OK, he's not as bright as Shikamaru but he's a lovely person and as important to Team 10 as Ino and Shikamaru. The anime didn't help by making him into a drooling idiot. What really angered me recently was the amount of shit he got over Kakashi's death and Chouza (his dad)'s near death, because people couldn't understand why Kakashi would risk his life to save Chouji. If you don't understand why Kakashi saved Chouji, you need to re-read Kakashi Gaiden. Letting Chouji die would be against everything Kakashi stands for, and Chouji HAD to go to Tsunade because he was the only one there who could move.And G-d forbid Chouza protect his own child. Grrrr.
He also gets bashed for the Jirobo fight because he was supposed to have died and didn't (because no other characters have survived being on the brink of death, oh no), and because he didn't show Jirobo mercy. FFS, if he had, Jirobo would have probably killed him. Chouji had to protect himself. He didn't know about Sasuke's background and why he'd gone off with Orochimaru, plus Jirobo had taunted him and mocked his best friend, and given that Shikamaru was the one who looked after Chouji when he was a kid and befriended him, Chouji had every right to be hurt and angry. People see him as this stupid fat kid and it drives me mad cos there is so much more to him than that.
- Shikamaru Nara: mainly by butthurt Hidan fans who can't deal with the fact he killed their precious Akatsuki bishie, even though he had damn good reasons for doing so. And of course, that makes him a Stu. I did have issues with that arc, I hated how Ino and Chouji were pushed aside, but I don't see the whole Stu thing, and I don't think Shikamaru is this evil sociopath Hidan fans make him out to be.
So there you go. I actually have some Naruto rants geared up - I'm in the Anti-Character Bashing FC on Narutofan, and I owe them a Chouji unbash. Once I do it, I will post it here.
