But sometimes they're not. Sometimes they're real people who actually DO have feelings, feelings that might be hurt if they saw all the vitrol being slung at them by butthurt shippers and entitled fans.
I'm speaking, of course, about Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, better known as Bryke among Avatar fans. You know, the guys who made Zuko, Katara, Sokka, Iroh, Toph, Momo, Foamy and all the characters we Avatar fans know, love and ship?
Being disappointed the show didn't come out like you'd hoped or not being happy with a character's development or the way the plot was executed is one thing, but a certain subset of fans take it too far. To listen to all their slams against Bryan and Mike you'd think they came over to the fans' houses and kicked their puppies into walls over and over again. Not just about how they apparently CANNOT DO ROMANCE OMG!! or turned the whole show into a Gary Stu fest by giving Aang his happy ending or claiming Maiko happened because Mike was rejected by a Goth girl in high school, but attacking them as PEOPLE. Fanfics where butthurt Canon!Zutarians stage a full frontal assault on Mike and Bryan's houses. Death threats. Likening them to nasty villains who drink the tears of heartbroken Zutara fans (really, all they did was confirm that Zutara would never in a million years be canon while poking fun at the more rabid fans, they never said anyone was bad for just plain shipping it).
Really, bashers? You didn't get what you wanted so all of a sudden they're shitty writers living vicariously through characters and setting out to personally be mean to you? I know you were disappointed but come on! It was their story, and they weren't going to change anything just to make you happy. Was it perfect? No, there were a few things that could've been done better or expanded on more. But not turning out the way you wanted does not equal bad writing or sadistic assholes. (Okay, fine, so they did make fun of their fanbase, but I could've sworn they were just having a laugh, not being true dicks about it.)
Just lay off the poor guys, okay? You have the right to be disappointed and you don't have to like everything they do, but bashing real people who have the potential to get their real feelings hurt if they saw this crap is just not cool. Not cool at all.
