I personally feel that the word Mary Sue is being thrown around way to often. It's one thing to call a self insertion character in fanfiction a Mary sue, but to call just about EVERY lead female character in a story a Mary sue, now that's just going to far ( Read more... )

Zidane Tribal is kind-hearted and he has a mysterious past. He also jas a crush on a girl. OMG. Gary Stu!

Riku is well-liked among the other kids on his island, he is the boy who beats everyone on the island and he has dark powers. And he makes sacrifices for his friends. Gary Stu!

Yuki Sohma is hot and he's one of the most popular boys in school. He's also kind and has a tragic past. Gary Stu!

No, I don't think that either of these characters are Gary Stus. I'm just using them as examples because I bet that if they were female then they'd be called Mary Sues.

And here's some more examples.

Harry Potter- Boy that saved the wizarding world when he was only a baby, has a tragic past, very powerful wizard. ZOMG Gary Stu!

Cloud Strife- Tragic past, Good looking, very powerful warrior, has two (possibly more) girls that like him- Gary Stu!

Heero Yui- Cold hearted, has a tragic past, a girl likes him, called a first class soldier- Gary Stu!

Eh...about Eragon...I think the author basically admitted that the books evolved from his own personal daydreams. He even uses the "he has special powers, he's not really me!" defense even though he also admitted that Eragon and him share physical attributes and things. Verdict's looking bleak on this one. (Well, when the author's idea of "character development" means getting more cool super powers, I don't think there was much hope for him in the first place.)
