I've been a Gantz fan for a while now, and I've been easing myself into the fandom as of late. And I must say, I was a bit shocked at how much hate there is for Nishi, who is my favorite character.
Ok, so I do understand that there are people that wouldn't like him. I like him, but I know he's a type of character that not everyone likes. One person's damaged, complex, interesting character is another's raving psycho and all. And that's fine. We can all agree to disagree, and enjoy whatever characters we want.
But people who hate him seem to hate him for really freaking STUPID reasons. These are the two I've come across:
ZOMG, that coward JUMPED IN THE WATER!!1!
Yes, he did jump in the water. Because he was running for his life, which is what people generally do when being pursued by something that could, you know, kill them. Was he supposed to stand behind and protect everyone or something? Because that would be a plot flaw. You learn just minutes later that his motive for fighting is coming away with his life so he can get enough points to get out of the game. He got a second chance and realized that committing suicide was the wrong thing to do, so he wants to undo it and live.
Another reason for this is because he needed to buy himself time. Even though he's definitely talented, his fighting style is still a little awkward and undeveloped, because he's still just a kid. Cut 'im some slack, people. Also, I think he's generally more of a "fast, smart, and sneaky" type of fighter, not someone who tangles up close. His style requires a degree of range.
He died crying like a little bitch! (Phrase actually stolen from at least two loud morons on a forum)
Yes, he did cry during his death scene, and, as I recall, the minutes leading up to it. Fear and physical pain generally make people do that. If you were sprawled out on the pavement with your spine severed and your head basically imploded, you'd probably cry, too. Also, he was just a few points away from freedom, he was filled with regret for killing himself, and he was coming to the realization that he wasn't going to be revived. Physically as well as emotionally, he died a very painful death, so I think a few tears are warranted. I see no one giving Kato flack for crying because he can't shoot (not a dig at Kato, so his fans need not flip out).
So yeah, that section of the Gantz fandom doesn't win an internet, rather, it wins a small but oddly-colored kitty turd.
