'ello, newbie here. Been lurking for quite some time over here (as well as a few other communities) and I soon just broke down and got an LJ altogether. XD
Many of my favorite characters who are among the hated include Kikyou, Akane, Hermione, Keiko, Amelia, and many others, but I'm gonna talk about some other disliked characters I like and haven't been talked about here lately.
Yukishiro Tomoe, Rurouni Kenshin: First of all, I love Tomoe to death. She's without a doubt my favorite RK female, and possibly one of my favorite anime babes heroines of all time. This could come from the fact that I've got a fetish for tragic/dead females in general, but I think Tomoe is one of the most unique of them all. She's such a deep, complex, interesting character. Heck, everytime I visit a Tomoe shrine, I learn something new about her I didn't pick up while watching the OVAs before.
Unfortunately, though not portrayed in fanfiction, in various places on the 'net, she's bashed quite unfairly. One person reviewing the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (whose name will remain anonymous), was a incredibly anti-Tomoe. Direct quote from it:
"Okay first I'll tell you what I thought of the third OAV. It was... it was... (I'm having an ellipses seizure *hehe*) it was like seeing an entirely different anime (I'm overreacting, my adrenaline's shooting out of my nose). Parang, I threw everything I knew and understood of Kenshin's character right then and there. That's not Kenshin! That's a frigging kid being seduced by a slut! I should've listened to you and miss the 3rd ep all the same... but then. Yes, I harshly proclaim Tomoe as a slut and fortify my belief that its better off that she's dead (nyahaha... the only thing that made me watch that part was the reassurance that that b***h will die eventually)."
A slut? Tomoe? I believe a slut is one with no morals, correct? And Tomoe has morals, does she not? Plus, if Tomoe's going to be a slut for that reason, than shouldn't Kenshin be too, considering that he participated? Not to mention that the sex scene was decipted quite tastefully, and, to a certain degree, poetically. The person was also a Kaoru/Kenshin supporter and had no problem with Kenshin and Kaoru's sex scene.
Not to mention that the word "bitch" is also a very harsh word to use on a character like Tomoe. Tomoe is in no way a "bitch". If she's a bitch, then I claim all the women in fiction and real life to all be a bunch of bitches. Seriously. What does Tomoe do that deserves the "bitch"-label? She's a kind woman, and still getting over the loss of her fiancee. I'd like to see this reviewer do that.
But I suppose the main reason Tomoe is bashed is because she was Kenshin's former wife. But why is that considered to be a sin? Kenshin (I don't think; from what I remember of the RK series) never compares Kaoru to Tomoe, he loves Kaoru the way he is, and loves her just as much as he loved Tomoe. And had Kenshin never met Tomoe, then the Kenshin/Kaoru pairing would never exist. Kenshin discovered love because of Tomoe, he changed because of her.
Or it could be because some may find Tomoe to be manipulative. Really, Tomoe had no intention of falling in love with Kenshin in the beginning. She had no idea what type of person Kenshin was, only that he killed her fiancee, and that could give anyone a negative impression of Kenshin if that's all they knew about him.
Lastly, some may be annoyed that Tomoe doesn't express much emotion. Now, this isn't to give her the "mysterious girl look (TM)" (well, that could be part of it XD) but it's actually an important part of her character. Kiyosato proposed to her, and Tomoe was excessively happy about this, however, due to her problem of showing her true expression, Kiyosato got the impression she wasn't happy about this, and thusly joined the revolution in hopes that he'd impress her and make her happy. In the end, he died, and Tomoe blamed herself for that. And plus, I highly doubt Tomoe would've been as powerful of a character, and doubt that there would've been much development at all in her character if she didn't have the "emotionless" problem.
Pretty much every female of Saiyuki: Though the main females don't have the biggest roles in the storyline (considering the story's focused on the four boys) but they're nevertheless, disliked by many fans. Though I can understand why some may dislike Lirin (her "HYPERRRR!"-factor can definitely turn many off) I'm a little lost on why some dislike Yaone, Kanan, and Rinrei.
First, Yaone. It's a bit unclear why some dislike her (I've only seen her listed on those "characters I hate" lists), and even more unclear when the ones that dislike her, like Hakkai. Yaone's very much like Hakkai in that she's kind and polite, and dedicated to her love interest, Kougaiji (as Hakkai was dedicated to Kanan). Really, I think the only major differences between her and Hakkai are their character designs, and Yaone being a bit more timid than Hakkai.
So I'm guessing that the main reason they dislike her is because she's "clingy" to Kougaiji, or how she "overreacted" in attempting to commit suicide when she failed Kougaiji's orders to kill Sanzo-ikkoku. I'll admit, Yaone gave me a bit of an "eh" impression at first. But when I got to know her better, I actually became more attached to her. Her "clingyness" is her firm dedication to Kougaiji, and there's nothing wrong with that. Heck, this guy saved her life.
Next, Kanan. Now I didn't like Hakkai from the ten episodes I saw of Saiyuki. I really didn't. But when I got into the Chin Yiisou arc which revolved around Hakkai's passed, my attitude changed immediately. I love guys who are dedicated to their love interests, and Hakkai, at this point, was no exception. I loved the tragic story of how he tried to save Kanan from the youkai that captured her, how he killed them all, and yet by the time he reached Kanan, she had been raped by the youkai Hyakuganmaou, and she had to commit suicide in front of him to prevent giving birth to a monster.
Now, let's get into Kanan's shoes for a moment. You've just been raped by some freakazoid, and now you have no idea what to do, or what'll happen when you eventually give birth. So your beloved finally arrives to rescue you and you're extremely happy, yet you still have that monster inside of you to take care of. At this point, you either have to take a huge risk in giving birth to it and who knows how it'll turn out or what chaos may ensue, or, you can kill yourself, and the monster along with it. And neither action is going to be an easy one. Committing suicide in front of your loved one in particular.
While browsing through some Saiyuki sites, I read the profile of Hakkai. Of course Kanan was mentioned in his profile as how she killed herself: (For some reason, I found that really funny. Ahem. Pardon my unsympathetic nature.) Good grief. That's just disgusting. Suicide is never funny when being done in that type of nature.
But I believe the main reason that some may dislike Kanan is because, in the manga, she's Hakkai's sister, and they fell in love together, which is, yes, incest. But keep in mind, these two fell in love before they knew they were siblings. So if they weren't siblings, then would Kanan be more liked? If this is the case, then I'm very depressed.
Last but not least, Rinrei. I've seen her included on a hate list of someone's blog, and I felt a little lost. I liked Rinrei from what little I saw of her in Homura's flashback with her (I like tender chicks, leave me alone XP) and really, there isn't anything to dislike about her either. Really, what is there to dislike about her other than she barely gets any screentime? If this has to do with the "Homura belongs with Goku!!"-excuse, then I'm soon to lose even more faith in my fandom. Though I am a shipper of Homura/Goku, this doesn't make me an immediate Rinrei-hater. And if I were to choose who Homura would be better off with, I'd say Rinrei right off the bat. And I think Homura would agree with that. Heck, he was glad to die just to be with her. It saddens me than many Homura fangirls don't want Homura to be happy by tearing him away from poor Rinrei.
Kairi, Kingdom Hearts: I haven't played a lot of KH (I've barely played much at all, ack ><), but thus far, Kairi's my favorite character. I like her tomboyish personality and she just seems to be the most realistic character of the three "original" characters. And the bashing of her character is...everywhere. Many accuse her of being a Mary Sue (even one icon I encountered implied that she was a Sue) and that just earned a "WTFFFF" from me. From what little I've seen of Kairi, she doesn't seem Sue-ish at all, she just seems...normal. Others are Sora/Riku-shippers, as I've seen Kairi bashed in many Sora/Riku fics as a "bitch who gets in the way of their love". Can we say "headdesk"? It sickens me to see Kairi to be demonized when, really, she hasn't even done anything (in canon) that would hurt Sora and Riku's friendship, other than be caught in the middle of the love triangle.
Whew, sorry for the long rant. XD
