More Memories for Celtic Frost

For my second post of the day, I shall include my critique of the new Celtic Frost album, Monothiest. It came out today. Only a few hours ago, I scooped up a copy of the new CF disc, a copy of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil" as a gift for Tess and popped in the first album from one of my all time favorite bands in over 13 years.

Naturally, the old time, good old metalhead in me says it's time for the new disc and I can't wait. It will kick ass no matter what... and the pissy elitist jerk in me wants to say 'it will sound like Korn and totally suck.' Blah blah blah.

I'm impressed with the new release. I can start off by saying it is much better than Cold Lake. For most CF fans, this will fall squarely into the no shit category. I also think it is better than Vanity/Nemesis. Again, this may not impress anyone reading this. The album is a solid listen all the way through. Tom G. Warrificher's vocals are probably best compared to the "To Mega Therion" days but still stand out from all prior releases. After a few listens, I can safely say there is no sign of any nu-metal or gimpy techno or anything that doesn't belong there, really. The only track not reminiscent of their preferred style is a classical piece that closes out the cd and it fits quite well in my cheap opinion. For anyone putting this band in the same category as Guns N' Roses, thinking that waiting over a decade to release a new album and it would most likely be a disaster... no! I say it was worth the wait.

No, they did not top Morbid Tales, but did anyone honestly expect them too? They may have out-done "Into the Pandemonium" and possibly even "To Mega Therion" which is really saying something. If it in fact does stand up to such classic albums... well, that will be left up to the test of time, but I'll still take it over their last two albums any day. The catchiest of the songs on here is "Obscured" which has a My Dying Bride or Celestial Season feel. The rest of the album really does sound like a matured Celtic Frost and I'm quite happy with the result. Maybe a handful of 4/4 fist pumping metal anthems are what is everyone wants, but there's so much more to what is here than that. I don't think I have gone out of my way to buy an album on it's release day since Slayer put our "God Hates Us All" and the main reason for that was because it was released on 9/11 and I wasn't allowed into my own dorm.

Tom Cruise is stupid. Celtic Frost's artwork is also done tastefully... done with a similar effect of the painting used for the cover of To Mega Therion, but a different design of course. Oh well, enough babbling. If you've bought the album, please share your thoughts. I for one am delighted.

Ok, so it isn't two posts in one day, I didn't finish it until today. Oh well.
