We decided not to try and clear the final space today (spoiling our one-visit-one-bed record!) as we wanted basically to consolidate our gains so far - and E had a bunch of cabbage seedlings to plant out too. So we barrowed manure onto the fifth bed, dug over the legumes and brassicas beds (side nearest the camera, left and middle respectively) and planted the cabbages.
E was in charge of the planting - she squeezed in 27 cabbage plants and a tray full of French marigolds. The marigolds will attract beneficial insects and possibly repel nasty ones (can't remember exactly, too knackered to bother checking!)
The bottles are the now-familiar makeshift cloches, with a twist - E cut them in half and used the bottom half as well as the top! She just poked holes for ventilation and thus one bottle makes two cloches!
In other news, the broccoli seeds sown last week have started to germinate and we now have our own key to the community garden area which means we can go outside normal farm hours from now on. Yay!
E also reports that we have chickens (sourced by her chicken-keeping father-in-law who is also going to let us have the coop and various other necessaries). They are at P's place right now settling in, and will move into the farm as soon as we are ready to receive them. Gosh!
