"I think your hair is getting too long again..."
"No, it's not mom."
"Maybe I should trim it?"
"Mother..."
"Well fine!!  I'm just worried alright!?"  Came the high strung reply and as his mother stormed off, he heard a door slam minutes later.  Shishido winced as it did so as he resumed his homework on the kitchen table, some days it just didn't pay to try and be down here apart of the family.  A pat on his shoulder was the mild comfort he received from him brother and Shishido smiled tiredly.  He needed a day off from life.

Kirihara really hadn’t planned on studying at all over the winter break, but after a few prods from his parents and Shishido’s reminder about notes, he figured he might as well do a little something. His English grade had improved since he started trying, and with Shishido’s help he was able to catch on rather quickly to what he had been missing while spaced out or skipping.

In hindsight, he realized he should have e-mailed the older boy or found out his phone number for texting to say he was on his way over, but Kirihara was already at the door and had rung the doorbell.

Shishido was in the middle of scratching a sentence onto the page with his pen when he heard the doorbell go off and sighed.  Getting to his feet he ran a head through his short locks as he made his way to the door.  Undoing the chain and deadbolt, he unlocked the door and pulling it open found...
"Kirihara-san?"  He asked blinking dazedly, what was his kouhai doing at his house?
"Ryo, who is it?"  He heard his mother's voice shrill and he winced.
"Friend from school!"  He called back and willed his mother to just accept the answer and not come out checking to see if Kirihara was a Yakuza.

“Yo, senpai,” Kirihara greeted, grinning because of Shishido’s surprised expression. Absently, he wondered if they were actually friends, or if that was just something to tell his mother so she wouldn’t be wary. It didn’t happen often, but when people from school came over to the Kirihara residence, he usually told his family it was “some guy from school”, even if he knew the person fairly well.

“Sorry if I’m intruding,” he continued, trying to be polite in case any other Shishido family members were around. “I just wanted to stop by to borrow the English notes so I could study.”

A blink and a faint nod.  "Oh... sure..."  Shishido murmured and stepped back to let Kirihara in.  Closing the door behind the younger male, Shishido smiled at him and pointed to the stairwell.
"The notes are in my room, sorry to make you come all this way."  He commented in an equally polite tone, trying not to rouse his mother's suspicion.  The last time a classmate had come over to return a book she had been so badly convinced he was evil and out to corrupt her already evil son.  Yeah, it hadn't gone well.

“It’s okay,” Kirihara replied with a shrug. “I should have asked for them before school was out, but I kept forgetting when I would run into you.” Shishido was behaving a little strangely, for what reason Kirihara couldn’t even guess. If he wasn’t normal enough when they got to his room, he could bother the older boy about it. He slipped off his shoes and followed Shishido up the stairs to his room.

Things weren’t a-okay at his house either, but he when people came over they didn’t bother trying to hide their dysfunction. Anyway, if Kirihara was being too nosy, then he’d back off and leave Shishido alone after he got the notes.

As they were moving up the stairs, they passed his brother who took one look at Kirihara and sighed.
"I'll go talk to mom and keep her busy."  He said simply, ruffling Shishido's hair as he descended and hit the base of the stairs.  "Hey mom, about next week when we go see Aunt..."  Shishido smiled a little, his brother was godsend.
Directing them to his room, he opened the door to a surreptiously neat and very tidy room with few personal decorations on it save for some photos framed on his desk.
"Welcome to my lair, I guess."  He added amused as he shut the door.

Shishido’s “lair” looked more like a guest room instead of a teenage boy’s place to live in. Maybe Shishido didn’t know how to live messily and play video games, which was weird. Or, even weirder, maybe he didn’t like doing either of those things. Unable to keep his mouth shut for much longer, Kirihara asked, “So what’s up with your mom?” With the door shut, he felt a little more comfortable asking a personal question like that, but there was always the possibility of Shishido’s room being bugged. Who knew?

Shishido shrugged as he sat on the bed and picked up his cap from his desk table.  Pulling that on, he felt a little more normal as he gestured for Kirihara to sit anywhere, on the chair, on the bed too if he wanted, or hell even the floor.  Whatever made the kouhai comfortable.
"She's... worried, that's all."  He said uncomfortably, not really wanting to go into his history and all that.
"The notes are in that blue binder on the desk by the way."  He added, trying to untactfully change the topic of conversation.

Kirihara hopped on the bed, and reached over to grab the binder Shishido had indicated. He flipped through it quickly, not really looking at the pages in any detail before observing his senpai. By pointing out the notes he probably didn’t want to talk about whatever was eating at him, but still… “Worried about what? That I’ll come in and leave tracks on her nice clean floor? Or that I’ll keep you from being productive?” And realistically, he would be a distraction for a while, but he did make sure he didn’t go through any mud on the way over.

Shishido laughed slightly at the rogue comments and gave Kirihara a bemused smirk as he shrugged again.  For a moment he debated giving Kirihara a falsity, then decided against it.  Kirihara had been a good friend so far, and the fact that he was even concerned warmed the brunette a little, so he answered truthfully.
"When I was in Middle School I was a delinquent and on the fast track to becoming a Yakuza.  When I came into High School I finally put it all behind me... but she still thinks I'm running around at night stealing and killing, even though she hasn't had to bail me out of jail in three years."  He remarked solemnly flopping back on his bed and looking at the ceiling as an excuse to not have to look at Kirihara and see his reaction.

Getting involved with the yakuza was stupid in the long run, Kirihara knew, but… it was kind of cool, too. Shishido didn’t really come off as a badass, but to have that kind of history interesting. Jail would have definitely sucked, though. “If I were your mom I’d probably be on your back too,” Kirihara said after a moment, attempting to fight down the urge to ask about the other boy’s middle school years, “but not that much. And I hope I don’t look like a delinquent.” He grinned and scratched his head - his wild hair and disheveled shirt made him not so much a candidate for the “good boy” stereotype.

Kirihara paused for a moment before giving into at least one question. “What made you quit it?”

Shishido smirked at Kirihara, good, he hadn't freaked out like some of his classmates had.
"Don't worry, you're not the worst one I've brought home."  He informed his kouhai laughed slightly and shaking his head.  It was true, over the high school years he'd had friends worse that had visited, dyed hair, piercings, gang jackets and everything sometimes popped up, old gang members just saying hi or seeing how he was doing.
After a moment he gained a dark look at Kirihara's question and the smile slipped off his face as he slipped his eyes shut.
"I decided I had to get out before I went so far I couldn't.  That... and my mom was sick."  He answered vaguely, eyes slipping to half mast as he remembered what had ultimately caused him to leave.

“Oh, okay.” Kirihara really didn’t know what else to say, especially with Shishido looking the way he did. He wasn’t an analyst and didn’t want to get too involved with whatever was really bothering Shishido, but it still felt oppressive, even for being here a short time. “You should move into the dorms,” Kirihara suggested. “It’d get you away from here and your mom wouldn’t have to worry so much. Plus, then I could drag you to play video games and you could treat your wonderful kohai to food when he gets good grades in English.” The second-year wasn’t entirely serious; it was only something to draw Shishido out of whatever place he was inside his head.

"Because it really would be the better thing for me wouldn't it?"  Shishido asked amusedly as Kirihara entered food into that statement.  He chuckled and thought it over.  It wasn't a bad idea, to be honest.  It would make things a lot less tense at home, and even if his brother wasn't saying anything about it he could see it was beginning to weigh on him too.
"I'll think about it."  He added in smirking at the kouhai amused.  He liked this, he decided, having friends.  It had been a while since anyone had really cared about him anyway.

“You know I’m in the dorms now, so if you ever feel like hanging out…” Kirihara said, shrugging one shoulder. It wasn’t a poorly veiled offer of escape. Nope, not at all. Just because Shishido had been pleasant to him without judging him based on reputation and rumors alone, or because Shishido kept things realistic. Nope.

Maybe one day he’d tell Shishido why he had to transfer schools so many times, but for now… “Well, I got what I came for, and since it’s like this I bet your brother’s running out of distractions for your mom, so I’ll head off.”

Shishido was silent for a moment, then he nodded.
"I'll walk you out."  He offered sliding to his feet and straightening his shirt as he did so, as it had become slightly rumpled while he had lay on his bed.  He didn't need his mom getting anymore strange ideas about him and his friends...
After a moment of thought, he also added in: "Thanks for the offer, Kirihara-san."

“Yep. Gotta repay you somehow,” Kirihara joked, waving the binder in the air. As they walked downstairs, he figured it wouldn’t be the best time to tell Shishido he sounded weird adding a “-san”, but decided in front of his mother might not be the best time to bring it up. Jamming his shoes on quickly, he grinned. “See you later, senpai.”
Shishido followed Kirihara, thinking for a moment.  Coming a stop outside the door, he watched his friend put on his shoes and waited for a moment before asking, perhaps a bit awkwardly.
"Hey, Kirihara... you up for hanging out tomorrow after school?"  He asked after a moment, feeling a bit apprehensive.

Kirihara was, admittedly, somewhat surprised Shishido actually took him up on the offer, but glad nonetheless. Having an actual friend to hang out with was something of a novelty. “Sure. I’ll come find you in the third-year hallway after I get out,” Kirihara offered. “Sound okay?”

Shishido smiled and nodded.
"I'll see you tomorrow then."  He agreed looking very pleased.
"Sorry Ryo, ran out of things to talk about, better get him out quick."  His brother hissed as he ran by and no sooner had those words been said, Shishido's mother's voice called.
"Ryo, are you upstairs?"
"Ack, run!"  Shishido hissed urgently glancing over his shoulder wincing.

Kirihara really didn’t fear any kind of mother, but since it was Shishido facing her wrath, he didn’t have to be told twice, and took off in the general direction of the campus.

As Shishido closed the door shut lightly, the footsteps of his mother sounded behind him and he turned putting on his best relaxed expression.
"Ryo."  She began softly and Shishido blinked.
"Hmm?  What's wrong-?"  He broke off as she held something up and he paled.  Oh crap.
"What is this?"  She asked, a touch dangerously as she held up the set of high heels he and Niou had ended up purchasing for that stupid joke they were going to do.  For a moment he struggled with several possible lies, before he finally sighed and walked up to her, snatching them from her grip.
"They're mine, okay?  It's for a joke."  He informed her blankly and her mouth thinned.
"Who was that just now?  Another boy?  Why don't you ever bring home a girl?"  She whispered, voice tense.
"Because I don't have any close girl friends mom, you know that."
"You don't have any at all!"  She suddenly shrieked and his brother came down the stairs, concerned at the growing voices.  "You look like you're gay, all the neighbhors think that!  Do you want them to think that!?"  She screamed and Shishido's face drew into a blank anger.  He was just about fed up.
"And?  What if I am gay?"  He threw out there irritated, ready to storm out of there that instant.
The slap that echoed off the walls was impressive as his brother raced down those last few steps and took hold of their mother.
"Mom, mom stop!  He was joking, he wasn't serious!"
"GET OUT.  I DON'T WANT YOU IN THIS HOUSE, GET OUT!!"
Shishido was already up the stairs and in his room, throwing the few precious things he had into a backpack.  Clothes, school work, those pictures...  his cheek burned from where he had been slapped and zipping the bag shut, he threw it over his shoulder and opened his window which opened onto the house garage.  It was how'd he gotten out every night in Junior High without being noticed.
"Ryo!  Ryo hang on!"  His brother called and Shishido didn't even look back as he dropped out the window onto the garage.  Making his way over, he leaped into the tree next to it, and dropped a few branches before hitting the ground.  From there he headed to the school dorms.
Hopefully, one of his friends would take him in for the night.
