So a very crafty person by the name of
Johnny Lee has used the Wii remote to implement items that until now have required either an assload of extra software, an EE degree and a lot of free time, or big bucks.
The multi-point interactive whiteboard is the coolest in that I could use it now (though I would need a cheap projector to make it work the best until I finish the repair on one of my screens (today, really! *P)), and the coolest tech is the head tracker for VR-based desktop displays. Position trackers, like Ascension's Flock of Birds can be several hundred to thousands of dollars. I'm sure that more elegant approaches have come out since the expansion of CG in movies using kinetic input from actors, but the cost wouldn't have come down on these.
So most of the things that he is talking about require a WiiMote ($30, or $60 if you were like me and got WiiPlay in anticipation of getting a console and play on everyone else's console until you find one ;) and some components for the emitter (IR LEDs, plus some control/power bits, BOM of like $4 including 2 AA batteries for the whiteboard
pen setup, so $8 for a multitouch screen setup).
I love tech like this. It reminds me of the CueCat hacking of old, but without the angst associated >:D
