The floor in the Medbay was cooler than Toothless would have liked, but it was hardly relevant. While he did, in most cases, prefer to sleep on warm ground (preferably still steaming, really), he would make do with what he had if it meant he could be present when Hiccup woke up ( Read more... )

Toothless was quite certain he Did Not Like This. This-- whatever it was that Hiccup was doing, right then, the funny little hitched gasps and the face-leaking. Whatever it was, Toothless was growing steadily less and less fond of it and whatever had caused it. He was far from a stupid animal, he knew something terrible had happened, but he hadn't been present for most of it. Hiccup had gone somewhere, he knew that much. He had gone somewhere, and when he came back things were terrible. There was blood, and there were so many foreign smells that just shouldn't have been there.

Focusing that moment on consoling the distraught teenager, Toothless craned his neck forward again and rested lightly over Hiccup's form-- no weight was put on him, as Toothless was more than aware that he classified as fragile at present, but he leaned just close enough to where there was contact and warmth and a general comforting feeling.

All the while, he made the decision (though it would likely never stand if Hiccup actually decided something to the contrary) to never let the teenager out of his sight again.

The dragon took to making a quiet sort of rumbling sound, not unlike a purr, while his Viking took to venting his obvious fear and frustration in the form of wretched sounds and more face leaking. It bothered him, sure, but Toothless had come to realize over time that Hiccup rarely did anything for no reason. So he allowed the boy to have his meltdown, remaining quiet and present and warm, until he recoiled slightly-- slowly --when he apologized, fixing him with a perplexed stare.

Now, what on earth was he apologizing for? For leaking? Yeah, sure, it was kind of strange and now there was likely Hiccup snot on his snout, but there were worse things in the world. Rolling his reptilian shoulders in something that looked oddly like a shrug, Toothless ducked his head forward again and licked Hiccup, simply, across the entirety of his face.

Toothless realized this, and recoiled with a pretty funny expression on his face, his tongue lolling sideways out of his mouth for a moment. Gross, Hiccup. We kind of adore you, but leak less from your facial orifices next time you have a meltdown, okay? We'd greatly appreciate it.

Again, the sudden movements startled the dragon-- though more in concern over Hiccup's state than the suddenness of them. He reeled away from the table and attempted to circle around it to cease Hiccup's defiant removal of the IV and himself from the bed-- wasn't that supposed to be there? --until the teenager stumbled and fell with an unceremonious grace into him and Toothless eased himself to the floor with the boy. Boggling, Toothless watched as Hiccup tugged the strange soft things that humans liked to sleep with to the floor with him and settled somewhat, folding his ears back in disapproving alarm.

Not that he minded-- he quite enjoyed Hiccup's company, and it certainly seemed like the boy needed Toothless' own at present, but...

Huffing, Toothless stretched his neck and tail out and around, forming a sort of half-moon shape around Hiccup and closing his eyes over part-way. Fine, if you insist on sleeping on the floor here, at least let me shield you from anything and everything that even dares to breathe near you.

Toothless' eyes closed the rest of the way at Hiccup's exhausted affection, the purr-like rumbling returning to serve as a soothing white noise. He huffed again, softly, when the Viking made his request-- who was he going to tell, and more importantly, how? Most people were rather terrible at playing charades with Toothless, he doubted he could figure out a means to tell anyone of the events that had transpired.

Though were the situation different and the boy dozing against him less injured and less precious to Toothless, he may have tried to find a way to simplify dragon charades to tell Astrid. Just to make Hiccup's life difficult.
